Share your XJ's personality quirks!

"My Jeep doesn't have problems, it has character!"

Lol, those "quirks"... they all have em. They can be annoying, sure. But they're also what makes your Jeep your Jeep.

So lets hear em! I'll start with my '92.

Of course, my center AC vent has a folded up receipt tucked in it, so it'll point somewhere other than the console.

Despite adjusting everything possible, the rear passenger door doesnt open unless you push in on it as you push the button.

At least once a week i have to readjust the driver side mirror.

Despite an extreme deep-cleaning, every now and then i catch a strong wiff of old stale weed, lol.

My speedo works just fine, but the odometer is dead as a doornail.

At highway speed, there's a soft rhythmic vibration/rattle behind the dash that for the life of me i can't track down.

I've adjusted and reset them several times, but even though they park several inches above the lower windshield trim, when in use the wipers slap the trim every time they sweep down. Loudly.

She's a cranky old girl with an excess of personality. But she's mine.

My 96 XJ:

My OBD2 connection fails on cold days during startup, but if I cycle the power of the adapter it connects fine. Never during the warm months though.
My front shocks, though relatively new, moan and groan, especially in cooler weather
On very cold days I get a scratching noise from up near the front of the passenger side roof rack rail that resonates through the roof and into the cab

my xj has a delayed shift into reverse (been like that since I bought it in 2010 never got worse)
the wipers are slow even on high
if I forget to turn my headlights off before I shut it off the twilight mode keeps them on forever so I have to turn them off and then cycle the key lol
vibes, vibes, and more vibes but that's the nature of something with 230k , welded solid motor and trans mounts, bias ply 34" swampers on real beadlocks that wer home built and its also locked front and rear
the windshield has weld spatter and grinder sparks imbedded in it so it sounds like sand on it when my slow wipers run I guess I should have used a weld blanket when building my exo
the radio is in the union....it works when it wants and not very good or very long lol!
the locks are stiff and pretty much don't work

'88 still has a random high idle at times, even though the sensors are cleaned and adjusted correctly.

Head light switch has several dead spots when adjusting dash light brightness.

High beam switch has three settings - high beam, low beam, no beam.

There is a clunk in the front end SOMEWHERE when going over bumps. I have replaced everything in the suspension - front and rear, including the axles. NO IDEA where the clunk is coming from.

Rear windows have no weather stripping around the glass. The glass rattles while driving.

mine didnt come with the dome light switches in the rear doors so if i need in the back seat i have to leave one of the front doors open or manually turn the light on

Sometimes, if I have to set too long waiting to turn, my turn signals get tired and stop flashing. They just stay on, both outside lights and inside indicator arrow light. They're just like "Turn already! No? Fine! I'll stay lit, but I ain't flashing no more"

My old gold one drove me nuts doing the same thing. Ended up being a bad motor mount.

Mine's the same way, lol. No dome switches for the back doors or the hatch.

Lol, I've never seen any other XJs like that either.

The dome light doesn't come on with the rear doors or hatch on my 90 either. Mine is a very stripped down model (just the way I like a jeep), so I assumed that was normal for all of the base models.

I will have to look at the motor mounts. I know they are at least 7 years old (PO put a new motor in 7 years ago). Good excuse to upgrade to some Brown Dogs or similar. If that fixes the clunk, I owe you a cold one.

TwistedWrench 10-05-2018 04:03 PM

Yeah mines the same way. Manual trans, windows, locks. Bare bones, only extras other than the 6cyl and 4wd are AC and a console. Lol, not sure what qualified as "sporty" but it's a Sport.

And i forgot two of her quirks;

Driver's window doesn't quite roll down all the way. Despite my best efforts to grease/adjust/clean everything, it still stops bout 1.5" from the bottom.

Left turn signal doesnt cancel on its own.

My driver's window regulator has given up, so when I put the window up if I'm not careful I get a pleasant grinding sound. I have a new motor and regulator, but why fix what isn't broken?

The only way to control any of my windows is through the driver's controls. All the other windows do not work through their individual controls. Unless of course I have my kids with me, then they work fine for them. It's perfectly executed opposite child lock outs.

Only during the summer months, if I start it up after sitting for about 15 minutes after running to full temp then it will spit and sputter and eventually the CEL will come on (unless I give it a quick blip of throttle when I start it). I've noticed that if it's less than 13 minutes, she starts fine. More than 17 minutes also starts fine. Seems to be that very small window of time.

My wife recently asked me if I wanted to get a newer vehicle. I threw up in my mouth a little. I'm not parting with my jeep for anything.
