John has logged more miles in multiple jeeps both sleeping under the stars with or without a tent, and inside a "worthless RTT" than anyone on this forum. Dude just came back from driving to MONTANA for Christ's sake. He has experience both you and I don't, and after a SINGLE trip cross country in my XJ, I'd want a RTT for the next time I do it. My buddy is one his second summer long cross country trip and built a trailer with a RTT bc he knew after his first time he needed the cargo room, convenience, and comfort.

What am I emphasizing here? Oh, experience. You don't have it, so STFU or GTFO dude.

I like the idea of a roof top tent. But id rather have it on a Offroad Trailer. That way you get plenty of storage plus if you decide to pull away from camp you don't have to take down the tent. Something like this is what id like to get. There's even storage under neath the tent and removable boat racks.

Storage and convenience. It's got nothing to do with being off the ground (to me anyway).

The fact that I could bolt a RTT to the top of an offroad trailer, have 90% of my gear inside the trailer, not have to find a level spot for a tent, worry about a mattress or blankets and pillows for my old ***, and ease of set-up is what makes a RTT valuable to me.

^^X2^^ exactly what im saying. When on a offroad trailer it makes perfect sense. Not saying on a jeep roof top doesn't. But to me id rather have one on a offroad trailer.

When you young bucks get up there in age you'll find that crawling around down on the ground to get in a tent isn't all that great on your back and knees. And then having to get up the next day for some wheeling makes the seat time that much worse. I guess its just an added luxury for us older folks to be able to enjoy the camp life. Lol.

Cool... enjoy.

Do yourself a favor, find a third or even fourth Yakima/Thule bar/s under the RTT. The floors tend to bow if heavy or several people inside, the crossbars will prevent that. I ran with 4 crossbars..

I like the RTT on the trailer in most situations also, it's easier to deploy and stow. But..i dont always wanna pull a trailer either. Normally i carried a small step ladder in the rig for when it's mounted up top, but my XJ was pretty tall.

I have a bad back, hurt it 16 years ago at work. About 5 years ago it was find a solution to eliminate tents and air mattress setup/teardown or buy a Winnebago... couple that with the fact i'm an old bastard nowadays.

Ah, I see. You've got a good point there. The only people that will be sleeping in there will be me (150lbs) and my girlfriend (120lbs), so between us thats about 270lbs. I appreciate the advice as I am always play it safe, than sorry. I'll scour CL and see if I can pick addition load bars and gutter mounts. Thanks for the suggestion!

Put all your stuff on the roof rack, and sleep in your cargo area?
