The only way id use a RTT is on top of an expedition trailer so I could leave it set up.

My RTT is the 1.8 Overland model from AutohomeUSA..

If i didnt go with an RTT i'd seriously look at an "OZTent" as my ground tent, matter of fact that may become my next setup.

I do still have it, will go on my trailer once it gets completed.

It is expensive new, but i got mine from a bud as partial payment for my Willy's Flatfender. The more $$ units are much better built than the cheaper models.. it's comparing apples to oranges..

Yep, folding up the RTT is a pita to go on a beer and ice run..

1700lbs empty.. towed one from SC to PA for a bud. Wouldnt want to drag one across the country and up mountain passes.

OP.. your 16, get a decent ground tent and progress into better equipment like us ole timers did. Save the funds for actually going and seeing some place..

I'm not spending a lot on this me and my friend came up with a mount that will allow a tent cot to fold all the way down against the top so it's streamline

how about just throwing your gear under the jeep and sleep inside? done it a few times getting to camp too late. Still take my $100 tent, side arm, good cooler and some rope over a roof top tent if your afraid of animals

Sounds like your on the money! My ground tent, 100% water proof-breathable, sets up in a couple minutes, pop a cold brew-ha-ha,(if your old enough)and camp.
I have a tent-cot, I love it. The bag it comes in holds a sleeping bag, sm. blanket and pillow. I use it when I'm gonna be breaking camp and moving often. I can toss it in the back or strap it on top. I keep it sprayed w/camp dry and it keeps the water out very well.
The top of yer' Jeep can be used for a canoe and sech,,

I purchased my RTT yesterday. I am beyond excited and will put it in use this Sunday.

I'm getting too old to climb up there to sleep. Ground tent, and a good mattress. I'm a happy camper.

Guess we all should run around doorless with angry headlights and poser lights on our a-pillars that do squat..

To me, just believe money is better spent else where and camping should be a cheap pass time for friends/family to just be together and not on their computers, phones or stuff like that. I also dont see the point of buying 20K (or whatever they cost) campers with TVs, air conditioning, satellite , and all that stuff a house has. why not just get a time share at that point?

If that's not it, what's the value that you see that others apparently do not? You're the one that mentioned others not seeing the value of the rooftop tent, I'm asking what the value is. Now you run away?

i don't think they're for everyone, but for those who do overland/expedition trips they are a wonder. in case you've never been on an overland/expedition trip, basically imagine off roading or exploring for a week (plus or minus), and completely living out of your vehicle (obviously). every day is camped at a different place, meaning every morning you must take down and put away your tent and every night you must set up your tent (unless you sleep in your vehicle). while setting up a tent is not hard, it does get old pretty quick. with a RTT you literally fold it out and have a ready to sleep tent in minutes. putting it away takes a little longer, but its much quicker than taking down a tent and folding it up. setting up a normal tent works just fine, the RTT is basically an added luxury and convenience on expedition trips. with my setup however i cannot easily remove it, so when I'm not using it (99% of the time) i am lugging around 300 lbs of extra weight, but i also get a camper shell to use, so its not completely useless.

some may see the price of a RTT worth it, others may not. for a weekend camping trip spent at one place a regular tent works just fine (i actually prefer it, don't have to take down the RTT to go somewhere).

It's kind of sad really. I'm probably the youngest person here yet I'm one of the only people here NOT acting like 13 year old girl. All I Wanted to know was if any one had pics of their rtt or if they had Sen or build their own homebrew rtt. To those of you who actually contributed thank you for the help.
