You can't do it with the NP249J transfercase that you have in your Grand Cherokee. The vehicle will roll away even in park and driving with only the front driveshaft will destroy the viscous coupler in the transfercase.

Question

somehow the fluid got drained out of the rear differential. The dealership quoted me $1500 for ring, pinion, bearings, seals and fluid. What would you recommend?

How many hours would it take a newbie and how much for parts?

Respectfully

"New" axle with same gear ratio from junkyard, about $150. Get some friends and some beers and swap the axle.

I second the "new" axle motion. It should cost really about half that for one axle to be rebuilt like you wanted, but shouldn't really be done by someone new at it, unless you can put away a lot of time to make sure you get it right, and research the hell out of it.
