Something to think about when you place the axle on top of the leaf springs traction problems and wheel hop can happen more often vs the axle under the springs.Do you have a local spring shop around you? Most can make you a lowering set of leafs and front springs for it.Mine charged me 300 bucks to re arch a set of springs i had and was cheaper then replacing them.

For a rookie kinda person swapping the whole rear end would be less to mess up.He could swap gears but still would have to set the preload on the pinion and pray he kept the shims on the sides that came off.
