is the rear axle from a grand cherokee 2000 the same width as a 93 cherokee sport

found a complete 8.25 with 355 gears my cherokee has the 8.25 but 3.08 and it is a 2 wd

Go for it. It will be noticeably zippier and your mileage won't suffer.

i have a 93 Cherokee 2 door 4.0 5 speed 2wd was thinking of lowering it by moving the axle on top of the rear springs

Great point, In fact, in town traffic mileage might even improve?

Something to think about when you place the axle on top of the leaf springs traction problems and wheel hop can happen more often vs the axle under the springs.Do you have a local spring shop around you? Most can make you a lowering set of leafs and front springs for it.Mine charged me 300 bucks to re arch a set of springs i had and was cheaper then replacing them.

Isnt that a bit like swapping engines just to get a shinier valve cover? Why not just swap gears?

For a rookie kinda person swapping the whole rear end would be less to mess up.He could swap gears but still would have to set the preload on the pinion and pray he kept the shims on the sides that came off.
