Rattlin' liftgate drivin' me crazy!
Hello,
This is my first post...looks like a lot of knowledgable XJ owners here so my simple question shouldn't be a problem!
Besides a salvage yard, just wondering where I can find the 2 rubber bumper jobbies that the liftgate closes against? Mine are all dried and rotted and the liftgate rattles and buzzez going down the road. If I have to, I'll go to a dealership to get them but I don't even know what to call them.
Glad I found this forum and thanks for the help! Tracer58

Replacing the bump stops MIGHT not completely solve the rattling problem...mine rattles and i haven't found a solution or anyone that has a great idea on how to fix it. Mine got better with new bump stops but didnt stop all the rattling. hopefully it completely solves your problem though.

I fixed mine on my 89 buy wrapping like 5 layers of black electric tape on the skinny part of that little post that the latch hooks to.

Thanks...
Thanks for the replies....I'll check NAPA, Turbo and maybe even try the tape idea, Dan. I thought about doing something like that because I realize the vibration is coming from the latch mechanism bouncing against the latch post. Thanks again!

Advance Auto. I found out early on that when the hatch struts are worn they not only won't hold up the hatch, they have so much slop when closed it can't stay shut.
Be warned though, once you put them on don't stand to close to the hatch when you open it for the first time. Lets just say it will open a lot quicker then in the past.

Strongarm Struts
Hey, thanks GTP. I ordered a pair of the struts from amazon for about $33. I read some of the reviews and a few people mentioned the stronger back pressure than the OEM's so it makes sense that the lifgate would bounce around less. Besides, I was getting tired of the the thing hitting me on the head whenever it gets below 45 degrees so I really needed to replace them anyway.

Hey GTP, that was Dan91 that tried taping the latch post to stop the vibration. I'm going to give those strongarm struts a try before I do anything else. Even if the tape idea works, I wouldn't think it would last long and might interfere with the latch working properly but I'll give it a go if all else fails. I'll post the results of the new struts in a few days, still waiting on them to get here.
