I think they are screwed on with torx screws.

To be clear, you are talking about the black strips that the stock rack crossbars used to mount to, not the white rails that your new rack is mounted to?

Drip rails are held on by clips. Lost the 1 on my drivers side. Looks like crap underneath. I'd suggest leaving it on if it were me. Just my opinion.

I can fill it in with bondo before I paint so it'll be like it was never there
maybe I'll go to the JY and accidently break off the drip rail from an old xj there
just to see for myself whats underneath

no. the silver drip rail or whatever the official name is
the roof rack mounts are easy they are torx. easy to fill in and xj's look great with them off IMO
that is, if you spend 90% of the time as a DD and you dont need a roof rack for anything

OK I'm not sure about your year, but my1998 XJ's drip rails appear to be part of the roof.

Mine have no trim on them, and would have to be completely "cut" off to remove them.

I'm not sure that would be so good for the structural integrity.

91-95. but I looked at a couple more pics of xjs and kind of decided that its not gonna do much for the "look" anyway. so Im abandoning this idea
I really need to start thinking about things before I post them. this was like my second stupid idea this week...

as far as im concerned they are "drip rail trim"....thats the only purpose is to flashy it up, one of mine went missing when i was pushing through a tight trail and the other is still on.....figured it'll tear off eventually but its usually just a bunch of crud build up underneath, quick scrub and some paint and good as new.
