Questions on rims & tires?

1989 XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 102,000 miles.

I am tired of the rims I am using that I swapped over my 94. They used to look pretty good but they are old and corroded and a shop broke the center caps years ago & I never replaced them. I want to get some stock rims. I already have a set of stock laying around. Will post a picture of what they are. But I really like the 5 hole gambler rims (10 holes ain't bad either). I also like the turbine rims too.

1. The gamblers are 15x8. Does that cause you to lose tire height, if so by how much?

Next I would really like to get a set of BF Goodrich all terrain's in 30×9.5 but that is probably not in the budget. So I was leaning toward the BF Goodrich rugged terrains. I have ran a set of Goodyear Wranglers. Which has the more aggressive look the Rugged or Wrangler? I have never seen the Rugged's in person yet.

3. Anybody running Gamblers, turbines or ones like the picture below (which I already have) I would welcome that.

Here’s my 10 holes with 235/75/15 wrangler trail runner at. They’re pretty dinged up so next time I get tired I’m hoping to strip/sand/polish/clear coat them.

edit: this is with the moog cc782 coil/crown hd lead “upcountry clone” lift.

Edit 2: Tires are actually 225/75/15, my bad.

Moog cc782 coil/crown hd lead "upcountry clone" lift.

I have never heard of this. I am about to look it up. So it just gives an upcountry lift, which is 1" correct. By the way Jeep looks good.

The theoretical lift gained is 1” - 1.5”. In my case I gained something closer to 3” in the rear. I tell you this because the result was major driveline vibes over 60mph, and grinding when letting off the accelerator at speeds above 25mph. My first thought was that my 225k mile old u-joints were bad, so I changed them. Nothing changed with my symptoms. Eventually, when I took the time to measure my results and realized my gains were so huge I installed a transfer case drop and everything was solved. Just wanted to give you that information upfront.

I've had the Up Country mod on my '96 since Sept of 2017. Both front and rear increased by exactly 2" and still are. I used a 3/4" spacer up front with the Moog CC782 coils. Rear are the Crown #4886186AA leaf springs. I can't imagine how you got up ~3" in the rear. Did you torque the hardware to spec after lowering the vehicle? Those are 235/75-15 tires in my pic.

I know it seems impossible, it stumped me for the longest time. Everything was done with the correct procedure, which is why it took me so long to find the culprit. It was only when someone else on the forum had a similar issue that ended up being the same fix that I thought to measure lift. I never wanted more than 1.5”, I just ended up way up there. I did however just re-measure to see where I’m at now and I’m at 2.75” on the rear coming up on 11 months installed. I was damn near 3” on the nose last time I measured, so maybe they’re finally settling. I wonder, is it possible that material/specs/machinery changed over the 20 years since yours were purchased until I purchased mine in 2017? I’m not the first person to have this result, so maybe it’s possible. Intriguing to say the least.

Edit: Also, I accidentally lied, my tires are only 225/75/15, oops!

Whoops. I installed mine in Sept of 2017 not 1997. Did the part #'s of yours match mine (Crown #4886186AA) ? First I've heard or read about the issue.

Those are the very ones. When I click that link it says “Purchased February 18, 2018” (so I got my date a little wrong, I guess I’m getting old, lol).

I also replaced my shackles at the same time with these: , but I don’t think that had anything to do with it.

EZEARL 05-13-2019 05:15 PM

No those shackles shouldn't be a problem. Did you set your XJ down on its full weight before torqueing all the leaf spring hardware (and in particular the shackle bolts)? What did you torque the shackle bolts to? I copied your pic then enlarged it but I can't tell the angle of the shackle. Spring looks to be really arched a lot. Do the bottoms of the shackles it face toward the front or back of the vehicle? You should be able to see that in my pic the shackle sits back towards the rear of the vehicle.

Well that’s some new information about the shackles for me. My mechanic installed everything and as they have been working on my cars for 24 years without a problem, I assume they torqued with the full weight on the ground, but my shackles are perfectly vertical. Perhaps one day when I have time I’ll loosen everything up, jump on the bumper a little and re-torque.

EZEARL 05-13-2019 06:10 PM

Good plan. FYI I torqued the upper shackle bolts to 60ft lbs and the lower ones to 45ft lbs. The front leaf bolts I torqued to 80ft lbs and the u-bolts to 65ft lbs. If you do find a problem and get the rear down to where it should be don't forget to remove the transfer case spacers.
