questions about welding on the axle tube while in the truck...
I have heard horror stories... everyone tells me that i need to upgrade upper control arm mounts when I build my 3 link front suspension...
what do I need to do that do this RIGHT
and what else should I do while I am at it...???
maybe build a 1/4" plate steel truss?

use 1/4 inch thick material for all your mounts. if you were building a 4-link you could get away with 3/16, but i would still build them with 1/4. and if you are running a d30, def truss it! and gusset all of your mounts.
i buy pre-fabbed mounts these days. there comes a time when your time is worth more than the part.
i use ballistic fab and ruffstuff mounts for all my link brkts.

ballistics shipping sucks from what i hear. i have a four-wheel shop near me that stocks all this stuff though, so i wouldnt know.
i would also highly suggest you pull the entire axle to do this work. it is very hard to do in the vehicle and i bet $1 you get burned by welding slag more than once.

Remember to disconnect your battery prior to welding. Clamp your welder ground lead as close as possible to each position you intend to weld. Did I mention not to forget to disconnect your battery! Clean the surface prior to welding, rust in the weld is a spoiler. Don't do the Tuttle weld method as demonstrated so may foolish times on TV, use a shield to protect your eyes! As suggested by hubfabxj, having the axle out can really help the job and your torch angle can be more optimized vs compromised by caramped quarters.
