These are old cars and it's time to move to the 2000-2010 range for a used beater.
What are some common migration parts away from the XJ ?

When I said done, I meant dead.
Like what's your next vehicle after this one is toast or crashed?

Bad question, the XJ will never be done. I probably will never go newer than 04 for a project vehicle. Besides, when the XJ is done, it will have everything either upgraded or replaced

2 door JK Rubicon. Red of course.

But that will never happen. If you can't get parts for what's on the XJ upgrade to something you can get parts for.
Chevy LS comes to mine. Motors, trans & t case shouldn't be hard to come by.

idk. it would be replaced with another xj or a base model jk. ive been leaning toward buying a new jk so i could hopefully not have to do old part repairs on my dd for awhile. even if replaced, i wouldn’t get rid of my xj. it’s worth more to me than it is anyone else.

Another XJ. But that's a LONG ways away. Pretty much everything on mine has been replaced/upgraded/improved. Plus, my rig would make the transformation to off road only buggy/rock crawler if it was in an accident...not too far from that now, haha

As for a replacement, in your case, are you looking for a commuter, winter ride, or what? The answer will depend upon what you need it to do.

Another XJ, duh. Nothing else comes close to meeting criteria.

I meant non-XJ replacement.
These cars are now old and most have 150k-200k miles on them.
I am thinking Rav4 or even a Minivan
or something else simple to work on.

Simple to work on? Maybe a motorcycle or scooter.
As for a minivan, my wife has a '07 Chevy Uplander and it is a pain to work on being front wheel drive with engine sideways. To replace spark plugs have to remove motor mount bolts and shift engine forward, then feel around the back of motor for the three wires and plugs. Even replacing the serpentine belt was a chore.

Subaru Outback. These things, especially the ones older than 2009, are pretty complimentary to Cherokees. I currently have an 05 Outback with a flat six and adore the car. It hauls *** on the freeway, gets 25 mpg while doing 80, and has more space inside than the Cherokee. Ground clearance is close to what a stock Cherokee is and when I put snow tires on it, it's almost as good if not better than my XJ in the winter. Admittedly, it's the most modern car I've owned (and likely will be) so it's kind of expensive to maintain and I don't like that it has drive-by-wire throttle, but it's just as dependable as all the Cherokees I've had. It's also more dependable and objectively better than the other four older Subaru wagons I've owned. The older ones are pretty fun to thrash around though, and they're dirt cheap. Rust just as easy as Cherokees too!

No Subaru even comes close to an XJ they don't have straight axles, a part time transfer case, or 1/4 the amount of aftermarket support.

i don’t think a rav4 is a poor choice. i know of a couple knocking on 300k with minimal effort.

I mean in terms of being a car - a piece of transportation. Not a trail rig or off-road truck. If you just want a vehicle that won't get stuck in the snow, carry a bunch of stuff, get you back and forth to work year round, and take you down some mild dirt tracks to camp/explore/hunt, a Subaru Outback is just as good as a stock XJ. Yeah, sure, if you want to actual wheel something, get a Jeep.

There are plenty of Subarus out there that make 600-800 hp. The aftermarket is quite healthy if you go the turbo route. I admit, my six cylinder doesn't have much in terms of power adders, but there's plenty of suspension parts available. They're also lego cars - you can take almost any part from any other model of a similar generation and swap it over.
