Offroading in a 2WD?
 

Hi guys, first time on the forum. So basically for my first car I got a 2010 Jeep WK 2WD. I live in the mountains of NC, so basically the country. I'm interested in offroading but as stated above im 2wd. I know Lockers would help but Am unsure which one I'd need or how to install. Also planning on putting a 2 inch spacer lift with some new bilstein shocks would make it 3" higher in the front and 2" in the rear. And also putting on some 33s Nitto ridge grappler or KO2s. Would that setup work well offroad without 4x4? Appreciate any advice.

You can add a lunchbox locker without too much trouble. There are several companies that offer them. LOKKA, Aussie, Spartan to name a few

Yup I'd invest in a locker for the rear and some good recovery gear. Maybe a winch.

No maybe about it, get the winch.

problem with wheeling a 2wd is you don't have low range. sure you could try to keep momentum to keep the jeep moving, but there are gonna be times you just need low range.
so i will simply repeat what everyone else is saying, get a winch and a locker. this will help you when you need 4wd and don't have it, but even us veteran 4x4 guys have winches and lockers, and we still have a hard time over some obstacles, but if you stay away from these type of trails, and just stay on the back country trails, you can still enjoy your jeep.

but that WK still has some value, maybe enough to sell or trade for a 4wd jeep, then you can enjoy the tougher trails without pulling cable all day.

i bought a 2wd xj for my gf last year and ive been having plenty of fun off road with it.
its obviously not going on any serious trails but for a daily and weekend explorer, it does its job.

If you are not going to hard core it, a rear locker and winch will be all you need.

This. And don't skimp on tires. Research and get the best possible for your needs. With a high quality tire, it is not unusual to be able to do in 2WD what others can only do in 4WD. On our Jeep outings we often see this in practice, as several of us like to stay in 2WD as long as possible (mostly for bragging rights).

Used to do the same thing way back when. This was in the days of locking hubs and moving levers. You would think that after getting stuck, have to get out in the mud and muck, and reach into the mud and muck to lock my hubs I would stop doing that. But nooooo.
Thinking about it now wondering why I just did not leave them locked. LOL.

One more thing I would add. Kind of out of the box for this forum. Get a set of cable chains for your tires. You won't believe how well these can make just about anything into a mud rig. I used to have a Nissan pickup. Went up a 30° mud road to get firewood, loaded up and came back down safely. This would have been a challenge with 4WD and mud tires. But yo uwill want to put them on before you need them and bear in mind that if you get the differential high centered you will dig a couple of holes quickly

Just ask some of the local good old boys how they get around in their 2wd pickups - LOL
