New Cherokee Day!!!!!!!

Hey all -

After 5 Cherokee-less years, I finally got myself another one!! I sold my '01 Sport (on this site) and regretted it ever since; so I've been looking hard and yesterday found this one. I was looking for a post-facelift 4-door, as original as possible. I found this three hours away at a small dealer; it's a '00 Sport in Patriot Blue, two owners (first for 22 years) and 181k miles. The dealer had serviced it, and it had new tires, battery etc and a new headliner. It's absolutely not perfect, but the best balance of price/condition I've found (it was $8k, which is fair for what these fetch in SoCal right now). It drove 180 miles home without complaint and was smooth and solid on the freeway.

List of jobs to do (all disclosed by the dealer before viewing):
  • Nasty clunk from the front drivers side when steering round corners; shock mount? Tie rod end? We shall see. Doesn't happen when going over bumps or on highway.
  • Heater/AC work fine but only through defrost vents; I'll be looking at the vacuum lines.
  • Driver's window works but makes a hammering noise when reaches top/bottom of travel. I assume a stripped gear in there somewhere.
  • Cruise quit working halfway home! Light went out and won't go on again, but horn works so I don't think it's the clockspring. This might be an awkward repair.
I'd like to find a set of used 15" Cherokee aluminum rims, (form a Limited maybe); since it has a set of new tires I won't go to 16". I'd like to find a nice set of used gray leather seats, though these cloth ones are in good condition. I'll put in a better sound system. Apart from that, I'll just slowly improve and enjoy it!!

0331 casting head?

benevolentelephant Apr 20, 2025 11:36 PM

Yes I assume so; but I've had them before and never experienced an issue. Plus the head on this one was replaced in 2016, possible because of this issue. We shall see! But for the time being I'm happy.

Check to see if it has the TUPY head. Take the oil cap off and look straight down. It will say TUPY in the casting or not.
