Exclamation Need Advice!!

Hey,

So my 2000 Cherokee Sport is in the shop. $1100 I've been quoted to fix serious rust issues through out the exhaust system.

It has 133,000 miles on it.

I've been qualified to finance a 2006 Grand Cherokee Laredo.
Pictured here; http://www.lansdalechryslerjeep.net/...c8df2ce13e.htm

It has 93,000 miles on it and I'd be financing it for 5 years at around $200 a month. (I'm just a struggling college student who loves her Jeep Cherokees)

I had a 94 Grand Cherokee and it had every problem imaginable.
My 2000 Cherokee Sports been so good to me---except the rust. The engines outliving the body.

What should I do? Fix the old one? Finance the 2006? My problem is I'm tight for cash so anything newer I'd have to finance.

I've also qualified for a brand new 2014 Patriot and I'd be paying that over 6 years at least.

Thank you so much for reading this. I've been researching and I'm at a loss. I need to make a decision by tomorrow.

-Allison

1100 dollars for JUST the exhaust system??? You can buy an entirely new exhaust system with a header for less than half that price.. I would take it to a exhaust repair shop, not a regular mechanic.. call a couple different ones and just say you want a complete exhaust system replacement and I think you will be surprised on how much cheaper that is..

I think she means exhaust and rust issues. Some states won't allow you to have any rust holes in the body.

My advice is to see if anyone in a local club can weld in some sheet metal for any body rust and weld in a new exhaust for you. If not and it comes down to getting a new one, then go with the vehicle that will give you the least amount of debt.

If you are talking about fixing the exhaust only, that's much too high!

I'd be hesitant about financing an 06. It's at least 8 now, it will be 13 when it's paid for. If you drive 12k per year you're looking at 72k more miles than it has now when it's paid for.

You can buy another xj for $1100 I'd get another quote because the exhaust shop has to be taking advantage of u with a quote like that.

D'oh, didn't mean to hit send.

So when you make the final payment, you're the proud owner of a 13-14 year old jeep with 200,000 on the odometer which may (or may not) have cost thousands more in repairs/maintenance.

If you do decide to finance that other jeep or any vehicle similar in age and miles get "gap insurance". If you are unfamiliar with gap, it protects you if the vehicle is totalled and you owe more than its worth (you will owe more than what the jeep is worth until the 5 the year of payments).

You will also need full coverage insurance (comprehensive not just liability) if you are financing it. Make sure to factor that into your budget.

If that price is for the exhaust and rotted floors/frame then It's fair but the full exhaust from the header back with a brand new cat and muffler only costed my $340 6 months ago
I would not trust that Grand Cherokee I'm Leary of the amount of wires and sensors in our old xjs as is that thing must have more electronics then apollo 11 did.

Such a good way of looking at financing. Thank you for putting it so correctly.

Sell cars for 8 years and you realize 5 year terms are for stuffing people into cars they can't really afford.

Some banks are doing 72 and 84 month terms now, it's just insane.

Thanks guys. So glad there's a Cherokee Forum because my last week of asking others advice has consisted of, "Why do you want another Jeep so bad?" Or "Just get a car." Lol.

I'm hoping a welding job with my brother will band aid the issues for now. It's looking pretty sad.
