well, they came stock with either a d35 or d44.
they are spring under, so using a cherokee rear axle will take a bit of fabbing, at that point, you can use a ford 8.8 to keep the same bolt pattern, or any other axle that you can weld spring perches and shock mounts to.

Is an AMC 20 a good axel to swap into my 89 Cherokee? It has a 35 in it now.

Many will say that the AMC20 rivals the strength of a Dana 44. it is definitely better than a Dana 35. they are just hard to find and have minimal aftermarket support.

A 8 inch from a 9 inch is easy,The lowest bolt on the 3rd member if you can get a socket on it its a 8 inch,If you can't get a socket on it its a 9 inch.On a 9 inch they made 3 different bearing size Name: rearflange.gif

Is this a good swap for the 35? I just have it sitting in my comanche trailer. So I will put the 35 in it.

This quote confused me. Put in the axle you took a pick of. Or a 60 those work too.
