Default Lifting my xj questions (4 cylinder content)

Alright guys, I really want to lift my xj but I'm a little worried about doing it because I have the 4 cylinder 5 speed with 4:10 gears. I only want to lift it a couple inches and put 31s on it. I drive it to work most of the time, 20 miles each way with a 65 mph speed limit. Basically my question is will it be able to do that, even maybe 70 mph? And I know most say swap in a 4.0 or sell it and buy a 4.0. Well I don't really want to do either of those things because this cherokee is in good shape which is pretty hard to find in this part of nebraska. So any input is much appreciated.

Yeah it could do that.

My buddy had a 4 cylinder Cherokee with the 5 speed and 33's with 4:10 gears and he never had any problems getting to those speeds. It was about as fast as it could go though.

I only really want to be able to get up to 70, most of the speed limits here are 60-65 and going out to a buddy's the speed is 70 so I want to be able to atleast get up to that just fine.

With 31's you'll be fine. Go for it.

How much lift would be needed to clear 31s?

I'm not really wanting to trim right away, I might want to later.

I fit 31s with 3 inches of lift with no trimming, minor rubbing here and there but nothing serious.

Did they rub when turning? That's one place I don't want to rub, if needed I would end up cutting for flexing.

sorry it took so long to reply it rubbed when turning, but only when it was off camber like pulling out of some stores and stuff.

It's hard to estimate whether it will rub or not.

Just make sure your caster is 100% adjustable with adjustable control arms, and you should be able to semi-adjust your rubbing.

Do you guys think it would look weird with a small lift and 31s with a set of bushwacker cut out flares on? The only reason I ask is because my buddy has a set of flares and hardware laying around that he said I could have.

Depends on what flares, pocket or flat. I don't care for the look of anything smaller than 33's with pocket flares. Here is a pic with 4" of lift pocket flares and 31's. Not my Jeep.
