Default Legality of going Door-less

So I was wondering what are the laws for going door-less. I have a spotless record "knock on wood", and I want to keep it that way. Where can I find an actual government document? I live in Wisconsin. I went to the station and they had no clue. I just want to have something printed off that says i'm legit.

Thanks for any help!

I varies form state to state and sometimes even from city to city on whether or not it is legal. The besy advice I can offer is to check with the local authorities.

In Maryland it's illegal, so for me it's gonna be tubes or halfs.

Email your DMV, if they don't know, then they will likely forward it to the state police, who should know. Thats how I found out.

so it looks like doors are not required equipment, but mirrors and seatbelts are.

wisconsin traffic laws, read carefully, i may have mis-understood something.

I think you will be fine either way, at least around where I live. The cops seem to either like jeeps, or just have much better things to do than worry about tire coverage. Tire and door laws are also not very well known, because there are so few violations of those laws that they rarely need enforcement.

I'm not gonna risk it though, I'm just going to either make tube doors, or some "1/4" doors that just barely have the hinges and latch to keep it legal. No reason to attract attention to myself.

Thanks everyone! I don't see anywhere were it says going doorless is illegal. I'm going to contact the DOT and ask them, then print off the email so when I do get pulled over I have something to show.

Johnny law here says if it came with a door it's required to run them and that includes Wranglers but unless you show your **** they don't really mind. A buddy of mine was cited for running doorless a couple towns over but he was also speeding and acting a fool. I ran doorless two summers in the XJ and in both of my old Yotas and didn't have any problems. Follow the other laws and you should be OK.

most they can cite you with is an equipment violation, fine only, no points.

just make sure you have mirror relocators and wear your seatbelt and you should be fine.

no rule that says must have doors in GA... of course we do have the second worse driving record as a state... lol... just "suppose" to have A mirror... but ive got pulled over with no tag lights, spider shattered windshield, no mirrors period, no cat, no muffler so was loud (sound violation) AND passing on a double line... but i could see just crossed alittl early... he said if he wrote me all the tickets the EPA would write him one... lol... and let me go... cops are laid back here so they dont care... but GA just changed abunch of laws so read up if your driving through!

As for my experience in NY, I drove past a on-coming sheriff (actually running a amber light) with no driverside door or mirror (yet). He looked at me and I looked at him but nothing happened. I am 99% sure it's legal in NY, just need a mirror. Think of how the old jeeps only had 1 mirror.
