It is a pet peeve of mine when someone calls the ZJ a Cherokee. It's like calling a Jeep a car.
Either way the ZJ has had coil over suspension in the rear where as the Cherokee had leaf springs. That could change an outcome of a rear end collision.
The whole thing is a sham. Unless they go after every car manufacturer that has put a fuel tank behind the rear axle I think they are just a bunch of loonies trying to make a buck.

Thread #3 for the same topic. But to comment on the issue raised, it's all a bunch of crap and nothing will happen. Did GM have to recall all of the 73-87 Chevy and GMC pickups with side saddle fuel tanks? No.

Mine has been rear ended before the lift and all I got was a dent in the bottom of the tank. The car that hit me had to be towed away lol
I towed in a Grand Cherokee that got rear ended bad and the rear axle was pushed forward and no ruptured tank.
small vehicles just slide under the tank. Bigger vehicles such as a Ford SUV hit above the tank. I really don't see a big deal about it unless it's a Ford Pinto.
If anything the Crown Vics are bad because the tank practically form around the rear axle which is sitting level with the tank.

I got rear ended in my last XJ by a civic. She hit me so hard her bumper was touching my diff and the back tires were off the ground. It never had even a dent in it. I put it in 4wd to pull off her hood and drove it away. It bent the stock bumper and dr side bracket but everything else was fine.
