Bed liner is going to be textured, not smooth. It'll be smoother if you brush it on instead of roll it.
I rolled Herculiner on mine.
If you're going to paint, make sure everything is sanded real smooth. Start with something rough. Low grit sandpaper is rough, high is smoother. Be sure to use primer, even if the paint says you don't need to. I used rattlecan rustoleum auto primer and gloss black paint for my headlight bezels. 2 coats of each if I remember right. That should be plenty to get good coverage.

I sanded my front bumper with 60 grit sand paper to start by hand... I recommend not sanding the flares or end caps they scratch easily and it's hard to get the plastic scratches out. I then proceeded to hit it with 100 grit.
I went Krylon satin black over mine, I'm not an expert painter I accidentally got a few runs. I actually put a coat on at night with a flash light and it looked better than when i added coat 2 in the daylight.
But anyways, spray can works fine if you're gonna paint. Remember to move the can and release and hit the spray button or you will run. It took me like 10 times to get the motion perfect and now I can't use any aerosol can without mentally using the spray paint technique.
