I have a problem

The good:
got hired as a delivery driver for Hungry Howies.

The bad:
When I start the jeep it idles rough, if I give it gas it bucks but the rpms go nowhere. If I let it sit it eventually stalls.
If I press the release valve on the fuel rail mostly air comes out with little spurts of gas for about a minute or two, then there's all gas. After that I try to start it it takes about two attempts but then it starts.

Help me with any opinions ASAP please, I start Monday.

-Pump/filter assembly bad
-o2 sensor failing
Get it on a scan tool if you can.

Could my check engine light be on from the o2 sensor?

VTJeep 10-24-2012 05:57 PM

Yes.. Of course! Either way it will give you some direction.

What will I be looking at price wise if it's one of those things?

Depends where you buy em. o2 sensor will be about $40 shipped from rockauto.com for an NTK sensor. A new Bosch fuel pump will be about $100 shipped from Amazon. And a fuel filter would be about $8-$10 from the parts store.

Don't think the o2 sensor has anything to do with starting. Idling, yes it does though. You have to turn it that many times for it to crank at all? Sounds like you have 2 issues here

it will crank just won't start unless i turn the key between 2 and 5 times unless it is warm but i have also been having to reset my computer every once in awhile bc it won't stay running without stepping on the gas idk i am lost

I'd say start with the scan tool and just see what it says. If possible, have it connected when issue is occurring.
Then I'd say drop your tank and inspect it and the pump/filter assembly. Pre 97 models have an inline filter. Check for debris in the tank too. As for price on that, I think it was ~200. But I went OEM from the local store. Easier to deal with if there's an issue, IMHO.
From there, I guess it really depends on what the scan tool says. If its inconclusive (for whatever reason..) I still say o2 sensor. The pre cat one most likely. Bank 1, sensor 2 I believe. Once again, I dropped 110 bucks on my OEM, locally bought sensor.
If none of this helps, then I'd start to think that one or more sensors aren't functioning properly. I don't think it's the ECM, but maybe the TPS and/or IAC valve. Not as expensive, both are ~40 bucks I think..?..

Good luck!
