It is the fact that they can drive it offroad if they want to. Not so much that they need to but they are being "Boy Scouts" by being prepared.

Wife, kids, scouts, camping, snow, extra room needed for groceries/supplies/bodies. We dont necessarily go 4wheeling but do tow a couple of atv's and enjoy the ability to go off road when hunting or for what ever reason whenever i want. Its difficult to acomplish these things with a ford taurus, not impossible but difficult.

in my opinion being a scout (i don't wanna hear any ****) it is the preparedness factor and the size mostly. People get big cars because their 3 kids all have friends and if you every have to take them somewhere they need to have room. Also the preparedness factor. as i always say "when **** hits the fan, grab an umbrella", big cars are these people umbrellas weather they use them like they are intended to or not

Well, I used to complain about those that I would see in a spotless jeep with not so much as a single scratch and way too much chrome and say, "what a waste." It would **** me off that people would build their vehicles up soo much and not wheel them. When I had my 92 in HighSchool I would wheel it every weekend or everyother weekend. Then when I started college we would wheel about once a month.
These days, I am lucky to get out a couple times a year. I am at the point of just building mine up for mostly street but still able to go off road because that is where I find myself most of the time just because of school and work...such is life.
However in the past year or so, just the fact of having a lifted jeep can help get me home during bad weather. In the past year we have had record flooding around my area and there have been times, the only way I could get home was to cross the barricades and take the XJ on a water crossing. Nothing feels better than driving by an abandoned Cadillac with water coming up your door only to just drive right out and up the hill into your driveway.
For those that strictly lift, chrome, pimp out their Jeeps or other 4x4's only for the satisfaction of having others gawk at their fly rides...more power to them. They can do what they want to, but I will never respect them. I will walk right by them at a car show and never give it a second thought.

An SUV is not an off road vehicle per se. Most of you that use your XJs for off road use spend thousands of dollars modifying them for that purpose. Where in the name "Sport Utility Vehicle" does it say anything about off road? I do a little light trail riding but could care less about making my Jeep into a true off roader. I do, however, use it as the name "Utility" would indicate to pull a boat, utility trailer, and haul stuff around in the back. Also, it's a great vehicle to have around when there's a foot of snow that's just fallen. It's nice to know I don't have to wait on a snow plow to get to my neighborhood if I need to make it to work. That's why I bought mine.
I'm certainly not a poser. If you want to find a poser, find a guy that's put a lift kit on it and 33 inch tires but never goes off road. There's your poser.

What about bad weather? Here in Michigan and like many other states in my area we get SNOW! So four wheel drive comes in handy when I have to climb my 100ft driveway to get to my house and there is a foot of snow on the ground.

I think that most people that bye them just want the security that if they need to go off road they can. Like in snow on the road. Really most people do not buy "off road vehicles" to go wheeling like we do. People just like to have a vehicle that can handly off road.
