Glad you were able to get some work going! Be smart though, get some money saved up for emergency use. Good rule of thumb is to put a minimum of 10% of your check into a savings account first. Then, pay your bills (insurance, XJ gas fund), then use the rest for whatever. I have a "Jeep Fund" that I put extra money into. It keeps me from just blowing $$ on it that could/should be used elsewhere.

Good rule of thumb is to get a 3 months expenses emergency fund, then the 10% rule comes in lol.

I make about 4200$ a month and 600$ of it goes to retirement, 200 to the Jeep, 200 to house fund and rest to regular expenses and spending money.

Congrats on the job bud. A Job is a Job, even if you're scrubbing floors. You could work your way up to manager there and eventually start your own sonics(if its a franchise, we dont have them here so I dont know)

Different economic climate. Gas is $1.15/L, houses START at 250 000$ for a junk townhouse, although you can get a place in a trailer park for 150k here.

Unemployment in my city is about 5% i believe. Keep in mind not only did canada hardly have a recession but Ottawa being the capital is a large percentage of government jobs which are grossly overpaid.

It may seem like a lot but if I lived in a smaller town I'd make less but I'd also spend less on basic needs.

Edit: I should mention thats before tax, and my tax bracket is 22%. Again, completely different here. lol

Heres a good example of pay differences based on country:

http://www.forces.ca/en/page/payscal...#ncmsregular-3

http://www.goarmy.com/benefits/money...-soldiers.html

Canadian Army Sgt: $61,704
US Army Sgt: $25,081

In Ontario a Sgt of that pay grade will pay 28% back in taxes I believe

You'd have to be crazy to open one with those financials. My buddy works for one in Michigan I believe, or Minnesota or something similar to that name. lol.

Yeah, like I was saying, do an emergency fund, then do the 10% thing.

To the OP, be smart with fixing the XJ. Don't throw too much into it right away. If you can get good parts for less, DO IT! Horrible thing to do is to get in the habit of all your money going into your Jeep. Do it right.

Let's say you're making $300 a week ($1200 month before taxes). You'll walk away with about $240 per check. Let's also assume you pay roughly $480 a year for auto insurance ($40 per month), $75 for your cell phone, then any other bills you may have. So each week, you should be doing this:
$24 into emergency fund
$24 into savings account
$10 insurance bill
$20 for cell phone bill

That leaves you $162 for whatever else is there - repairs to the Jeep, other bills, etc. Bottom line, get in the habit of saving. It pays off huge later when you need it.
