Excessively Floaty Steering!
Hi all,
I am a newbie from the UK and have finally after a stressful 7 months of on off repairs, MOT'd and put my wonderful Jeep 2.5TD Limited Ed back on the road. But after spending a small fortune find the steering wholly inadequate. Massive and dangerous play in steering wheel! Anything over 40mph and she's hard to steer straight. I only Know basic mechanics, but can anyone tell me, whats the most likely cause followed by a step by step check list when it comes to steering problems.Thank you one and all.
Metalic Green 1996 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD Limited.
Cheers.

could be either ball joints, track bar, tie rod ends, wheel bearings or steering box. get someone to vigorously turn the steering wheel back and forth through the "slop" while you are under the front end looking at all the rod ends and track bar bushings.
then jack the front wheels up an inch or two and grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and try to wiggle it front to back to check the wheel bearings.
then grab a bar of some sort and stick it under the wheel and lift up kinda hard. if you feel it move, get someone to check the ball joints while you do this.
or you can just take it to a front end shop for a free check.
