Default Drove for miles after a rear tire blow out on the highway. Goodyear Wrangler Radial.

Just driving down the highway and a loud "BOOM!"
I thought my rusted suspension finally cracked.
It didn't feel like a flat tire, and I wasn't riding on the rim.

Something was wrong, but not that wrong. The XJ was mostly level, or so it felt.
So, I drove on a blown out rear tire at highway speeds for several miles.
Pulled into a gas station, and the tire was totally flat, but still on the bead.
With the 235's, there was enough rubber to keep the rim supported.
The rim was unscathed. Got the trusty donut on and went on my way.

It was not the sidewall, but a large hole in the tread. 50k, my butt.
The $100 Goodyear Wrangler Radial tire blew out within 3000 miles.
I have not had a blow out in 30 years.

Goodyear Wranger Radial.
It's a total garbage tire that seems cheap and thin even when brand new.

If your gonna go 235 tires do yourself the favor and go with bfg all terrains. You won't regret it.

Yeah, I've got 235 Wrangler Radials, too. I love them but that 50K treadwear rating is a joke. Mine were bald by 24K and had to be replaced. I figured there would be a downside to $100 tires.

Really? Damn. I have well over 40k on my 33" Wrangler Duratracs.

Wrangler Duratrac sounds like a totally different tire than the cheap generic Goodyear Wranger Radial. It's a total garbage tire that seems cheap and thin even when brand new.

Ya those things are often on amazon for $89 with free shipping. Had them on a zj though for a few years. Not sure of the mileage. It wasn't driven a lot. Still have those tires and wheels. Only thing I kept after it was totaled. Planning on mounting them up on one of the xj's. I'll have to see how they do. Myself I prefer to go with coopers for a 235.

He didn't have thousands of dollars worth of tools to change his tire at the time.

That's what I was thinking until I saw who the OP was.

For most that would be fine but....

That was a good tip.

I was able to get the bottom bolt off using my impact wrench.

However, I was unable to pry the shock from the lower bolt.
I must have tried for 20 mins.
I had a long pipe and was rowing like a crewman, but the shock would just slide right back into place.
Just no way to get a good angle on it! My drum brake was also getting in the way.
I don't know how you guys do it!!

Undeterred, I decided to try removing the RUSTY upper shock bolts anyway.
I got several extensions on my impact wrench.
Half the time, my impact wouldn't work upside down. It would just shoot air. Even on a full charge in the tank.
I don't know how you guys do it!!

One of the bolts, I almost had to work blind, since it was behind the shock from where I was lying on my back.
I think I stripped that bolt b/c my impact wrench just spun around.

I tried the other bolt and my impact wrench just got jammed on it.
Didn't break it free, and it didn't snap it off, either.
The rear upper shock bolts are indestructible!!
I don't know how you guys do it!!

I will have to punt to a professional mechanic.
No clue how he's going to remove that stripped bolt way up in that cavity (if it can even be done)
Rear shocks on an XJ is NOT a job for the lighthearted and inexperienced.
I don't know how you guys do it!!

Confession; I had a small rear tire blow out at 55 mph (Volvo wagon). Had the cruise control set and the stereo up (with subwoofer). Only thing I noticed was the RPM's were going up and vehicle was slowing. At first I thought, engine trouble. But once I turned off the stuff, I realized the issue, and felt silly for thinking it was the engine. Vehicle still handled, did not make noise or drive rough. Replaced it on the side of the road.
