Default Drivetrain I.D.

Hi, just bought my first Cherokee. How do I identify what kind of transmission, transfer case, diffs, gearing etc it has? Once I know what I have, I can start asking about mods.
Thanks

There is a thread on the forum with pix. Check out the rear diff. If u have a Chrysler 8.25 it will look circular to oval shaped.<---(vague I know). Just search the forum.

Take a pic of your rear end from the back, and your shift linkage for your transfer case. what year is it? Automatic or manual? Tow package?......... Post pics and info..... Then we can tell you.

Thanks for the info, Its a 95 cherokee "country" 4 speed automatic, selec-trac, 4.0, not sure if it has a tow package, it does have a hidden hitch (1.5" receiver) I crawled underneath and the transfer case says "New Process" and the tag said it was 272 ratio. The rear diff is pretty round and the rubber plug in the cover says DANA on it. Thanks again

Can't remember which is which between select and command, if it has Full-Time 4x4, you have a NP242, if it only has part time, like mine, you have the slightly stronger NP231.

The transmission is an Aisin-Warner AW4. If the rear diff says DANA on it, it's a Dana 35, crap axle for anything more than stock.

Default Trailer package? think so. + cpl questions

Thanks for the info. Lo and behold, it does have a towing package. Aux, electrical fan, and I'm pretty sure that I can see a tranny cooler mounted in front of rad on drivers side.
My transfer case says NP 272 good or bad?
Its a part time 4X4
I was told (here) that my rear diff is a Dana, and not very tough
Is the front diff the same as the rear?
I hear a lot about installing "Lockers" in the diff(s) is this recommended, and will this mod thrash the Danas? I dont 4x4 much but when I need to I want top - notch performance.
Thank you

Easiest way to check about your rear axle is to measure the u-bolt. 3in = chrysler 8.25

Also, if your jeep has ABS it had the dana 35...sorry

As for the front its a dana 30 (hi or low pinion depending on the year?)

Front is a High pinion Dana 30 which is a great axle. I think your tcase tag may be worn out, there was never a NP272 in a Cherokee, maybe a NP242.

Thanks for the answers guys, very helpful. Too bad about the Dana 35 lol. I mustve imagined I saw NP 272! NP242 it is.
