cherokee vs. grand cherokee (98)

i am looking at a 98 grand cherokee, what is the difference between a grand cherokee and a non-grand cherokee?

the one i am looking at has a 6.5" lift, 33's and a few other improvements and was used for rock crawling. anything specific i should look for?

The grands came dana 30 low pinion the rear if its a 6 cylinder its a dana 35 the v8s are a dana 44a.The common rust spots are almost the same rockers/floors but the grands the rear control arm mounts on the jeep can rust out and some have rust problems in the very rear where the trailer hitch mounts. With a lift that big make sure it has a sye.

Comfort level is much better in the GC's as well as options on them............The only time I had "Leaves" in the rear of my XJ was when I left the rear hatch open last fall and some blew in.

The Grand is quieter and has less wind noise. They're also roomier inside. The downside is they're heavier and sluggish with the 4.0, and the transmission is not as bulletproof as the AW4. Most Grand Cherokees aren't molested like a used XJ usually is. I love my ZJ despite its flaws.

Much nicer vehicle but I'll take the simplicity of the Cherokee for actual ownership. I am aferrrd of working on nice cars, ha.

If you seen my ZJ you wouldn't be afraid to work on it, it's not that fancy.

This is why I avoid used Grand Cherokees like the plague. Make sure you know the vehicle's service history and see that the transmission has been maintained. Even that is no guarantee.

This is very true for any 4.0 GC. Pulling a 2,500 pound boat in a 4.0 GC was a challenge on grades, but a 4.0 XJ pulls the same much easier.
