Me personally I don't like manuals on the trail had a few bad experiences with burnt clutches. but for a true wheeling rig I say XJ little older, cut it up and buggy it

The XJ is lighter,
Both engines are stone reliable.
The weak point is the automatic in the Grand, I would use it for a grocery getter.
The XJ wins out.

I have a 1988 cherokee chief 4 door 5 speed. The weak point is the ba-10 5 speed they have in them. Mine isn't lifted but I took it I took it out on the trails and it did amazing. Plus the 4.0 is bullet proof. Mine has 178000 and its still at full power.

Use the XJ on the trails and the ZJ as a pavement pounder.

I say XJ but I do like the fact of coils at all four corners.
