Default cherokee sport

Hi folks. My wife owns a 97 Cherokee sport 4 liter HO.
Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a Cherokee sport as opposed to a Cherokee? Over the years it's caused me a lot of grief/uncertainty ordering parts
Thank you!

Just keep in mind a ton of people feel the need to call the XJ a Sport. Like Grand goes to Grand Cherokee, they think Sport has to be attached to the actual Cherokee. The parts guys always ask me if it is a Grand or a Sport...

There were a lot more than those 4 options over the years.

84 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief
85 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo
86 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo
87 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo, Limited
88 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Sport
89 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Sport
90 - Base, Wagoneer, Pioneer, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Sport
91 - Base, Briarwood, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Sport
92 - Base, Briarwood, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Sport
93 - Base, Sport, Country
94 - SE, Sport, Country
95 - SE, Sport, Country
96 - SE, Sport, Country, Classic
97 - SE, Sport, Country
98 - SE, Sport, Classic, Limited
99 - SE, Sport, Classic, Limited
00 - SE, Sport, Classic, Limited, Freedom
01 - Sport, Limited, 60th Anniversary Edition

The trim levels really don't mean anything concrete since they changed so much from year to year although a few of them did have some nice standard options for the package. The later Limiteds for example all had leather, power everything, ect. Sport level was the most common for pretty much every year (well, I'd still say Laredos were more popular when they existed) so it's nothing special.

I have literally never had a parts person ask me if I had a Sport or not. They constantly ask me if I have a Grand Cherokee or just a Cherokee though which never makes any since to me since they don't get a GC option since they didn't make them in 92.

Mine is a 2000, that's why. I wish mine wasn't a Sport, just so I could have a little fun with them.

Sport = Misc. footballs, baseballs tennis *****, etc wedged under the seats.
Country = Corn and hayseed in the center console as standard equipment
Classic = Must be 65+ to own and operate.
Limited = Cannot exceed 55MPH or it will start dropping parts.

I'm here to help.

NEXT QUESTION!!!!!
