Cherokee at high speeds
Hey everyone
Been out of the jeep game for a while but want to get another for the winter. Has anyone consistently driven on the highway at high speeds (80 maybe 85) for long periods of time? I will be commuting often to the southern part of the state during the weekends and tend to drive quickly to get there haha. My last jeep I just drove around town and rarely ever was above 70 so I wanted to know if it would handle this type of travel well. Also I wanted to know if A slight lift (3-4 inches) would affect the high speed drivability as well. Thanks! |

I've got a 3 inch lift and 31s and I did 95 once. It was loud and little shakey but honestly not bad. That was only once though. Now I never go over 85 and cruise at 80 fine.

I commute at 80 on a regular. No problem. Got her to 100 once. Had to slow down for traffic. I ain't got a lift tho.

Xjs do more than 65?

Thanks for the help guys. Now to find a nice one that's not rusted out!

Most XJ's being higher mileage withy the 4.0 I would not want to regularly run at those speeds. I do so with my 04 Grand Cherokee "Overland" with a 4.7HO) engine or my 2013 Town Car quite a bit on the Turnpike but wouldn't with my XJ.
|
My XJ does pretty good at 55mph. I value my life too much to drive much faster without a airbag and lots of safety gadgets, and I rather drive my old xj vs a new vehicle (money and personal preference) so I stay slow :) Doesn't bother me much but I know it is like sawing your leg off to some people when they are going slow.

My XJ has cruised at 85 for 2 hours on numerous occasions and always handles it like a champ. 3" lift and 31s. Gas milage suffers above 55.

Fastest I have done in my XJ is 160kph, which is about 99mph.
Did it for 2 hours straight with no problems, running 31x10.5's. Confirmed both with speedo, and gps. |

I have a 6.5inch lift with 35's and to get to the wheeling around here have to drive a ways on the highway. My steering actually gets BETTER at higher speeds. Routinely drive an hour or more at 70-75. The only reason I don't go faster is that the spare tire on the swing-bumper starts to wobble. Once I shim that so it doesn't wobble, I'll be fine doing 80-85. Planning to take it to Mexico this winter, 12 hours each way.
Be warned, it is LOUD, though!:jester: |
Did 110 the other day stock cherokee with 120mph speedo, braking got scary though. Have buried the 85mph speedo down to the mph on the bottom on my other jeep with 2in and 31x10.50

I have a 1989 jeep Cherokee with a 5 inch lift sitting on 33X10.5 BFg k2 mudterrains and I cruise around goin 65-70 no problem
|
have cruised consistently at 100-105mph with 0 issue. discs with good pads/rotors on 4 corners, 3"ish of lift and 33x12.50s and upgraded steering.
