Cherokee: #6 on clunker list

Saw this on the news last night. Cherokees 6th most traded in vehicle on the cash for clunker program (right below the Grand):

I'm still wondering why they list all the other clunkers by model and year and the grand and the xj are all lumped together, regardless of year???

AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY OPPOSES CLUNKER PROGRAM

As new car dealerships ramp up advertising to attract motorists to the showroom using "Cash for Clunkers" as an incentive, we anticipate a consumer backlash once reality replaces the hype and car owners realize that "Cash for Clunkers" is nothing more than a clever slogan for a program to spend $1 billion of our tax dollars to fund a government-subsidized vehicle trade-in to help new car dealers sell cars.
Consumers will soon learn that they are simply trading in their vehicles and will still have to jump through all of the hoops to qualify for and purchase new vehicles.
The much-heralded fuel efficiency and environmental benefits of purchasing a new vehicle could easily be achieved through better maintenance of an existing vehicle or trading up to a newer, used vehicle. Any savings from improved miles per gallon will be lost from the costs involved in destroying and disposing of the "clunkers."
We continue to strongly oppose "Cash for Clunkers" because it prematurely destroys vehicles with many more years of useful life, denying consumers more affordable, used vehicle options.

Wow, there were more 1998 Ford Exploders traded in than all Cherokees years combined. Same for the 96,97,and 99 Explorers.

I've always heard Explorers had poor reliability, guess I heard right.

Drove past the rear of a dealership today, about 30 or 40 "clunkers" that had been traded in were lined up, noticed about 4 Cherokee's, I hope they don't crush those, what a waste of good parts.:w00t:

I find it disturbing that this government is using our tax dollars to get people to buy new cars from their (majority owned) car companies.

mannn. explorers? how about just looking at all the FORDS that are in there? i hate Ford. mayb it's better now that they "stepped it up with gas mileage and technology" but still. Ford's reliability in general sucks.

Food for thought

Does it make ANY sense crushing cars that have perfectly good parts? No. Should the aftermarket parts store suffer, NO. There HAS to be some sort of happy or near happy medium for the two. Remanufactured (repaired) items or repairable items - high demand parts - ...should be at the aftermarket dealer, the low demand parts should be put on some kind of lot...This said lot COULD be owned by local or federal government in a NON MAJOR CITY area - to attract people for these said low demand parts locations that are also designed to help the small towns out. HEY look at that.... perhaps I am for helping the LITTLE MAN!!!! This way its more like - go to "insert your choice auto repair store here" and have a choice of New, "L.K.Q." parts, or ...USED.... No hassle no problems - and the ability to finally find that part you can't find!!!! If thats not good enough then and only then should you have to pack up and head to small town USA and see maw and paw who can fix anything.....but wal mart is cheaper....the catch is... it'll break in 2 days anyway.
If we stay on this current course of CFC :nuke:, then we are gonna have some dinosaurs :wheelchair:without a way to fix em unless you have a heck of a custom fab guy/girl around. Might have looked good on paper :hang: but reality check time..... THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY

I tend to disagree a bit with this statement.

Never had any of their trucks, and don't plan on doing so...

My mom has had a 1995 crown victoria with the 4.6 modular V8 for about 8 years now. I learned to drive on that thing several years ago, it has over 200k miles on the original (not rebuilt) motor and tranny, and it can still fry the tires. It is a very strong car with a reliable motor. Nothing major has ever happened to it besides AC issues, and it is like driving a pimp car around...

I like it...

yeah that may be true, but does that happen as often as jeeps lasting 200k + and still being able to fry tires?
