Default Buying a cherokee tomorrow.

I looked at this Jeep today. It drives good and shifts smooth. It does creak a little bit and from what I understand it can be normal for a unibody. It has 209k on the body and has 80k on the motor. He also put in a power steering gearbox from a V8 durango, new u joints, cold air intake but has the original box. I talked him down to 3k. I know the classics are a better vehicle and I am going to look at a few tomorrow but I am wondering if this is a good deal. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know imports more than Jeeps and I am looking forward to learning everything I can.

where do you live man? I know those stock V8's go for $1700-$2300 in sacramento CA area.
that grand cherokee is build with crappy parts I'll tell you that right now
except the driveshaft. you can build a better one. that one is starting the downhill descent that's why he's selling it
not worth $3K. maybe $2300

I would pass and say learn more and keep looking, depends on what you need really, a rock crawler, trail rig, grocery getter? If i went v8 i would get a 5.9! Check these out i found in oregon...

X2

V8s are notorious for electrical and other problems. Funny the ad doesn't say which engine it has. Drive it, if you like it and every things good, consider it. Jeeps aren't cheap and its had some work done. Question is was the work done to fix or hide a problem?

I did drive it and drives good. It does make some creaking Sounds. It has the 4.0L. My use will be daily driver with the occasional trip up to the mountain for shooting and or wheeling. My limit is $4k.

I don't see any parts listed that would cause concern, but I don't see the value in what he's asking either. You can get stock ZJs around here for $500-1000 easy. I can't see paying more than $2k on that unless it's incredibly clean, which it doesn't look to be.

If you're not going to do anything but mild trials and mostly daily duties, you should consider a stock ZJ. My 95 ZJ is bone stock and will take me everywhere I want to go and I don't have the hassle of having to regear for larger tires and having to deal with lift parts breaking.

The Grand Cherokees sell a lot less than the Cherokees do because of the low amount of demand for them, so you shouldn't be paying more than between 1-2k for one (I wouldn't get one at all – personal bias against the Grands). Every used car shop around me is selling them between $1000-1500 and they are dealers, which you would expect higher prices from than buying from a private owner.

Price is way too high imo dont let the lift, rack, and wheels fool you. ZJ's go for cheap I would keep looking. I knew a coworker with a 4.0L ZJ hes been trying to sell for a while it has an 8 inch lift on 38's, Ford 8.8 front and rear JCR bumpers, long arm kit. He was aking $3k for a rig with over $6k in it and he cant even get $2500 and thats in Texas.
