Bronco II Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier Install pics 56k
hey guys, i was tired of my spare in my trunk and i wanted some thing different. i was at the junkyard looking for some front factory tow hooks and i saw a bronco 2 spare tire carrier and my thoughts began to wander. i took some measurements and thought it over for a day of how it would work and what not. then i went and unbolted it from the bronco II. It took about 15-16 hours to finsh it. it works great! i think it looks OK. i had to cut up a lot of stuff to make it work though. enjoy!
i had to drill holes in the body for the side brackets. i reinforced the inside with 1/4inch steel plate so i would eff it all up. i also has to knotch out the plastic bumper cover thing and i lined it (most of it, havent gotten to the store yet lol) with door edge crap.
I made a rubber space to fit the body lines ( out of a wheel chock lol that stuff is HARD to cut) and yeah i know i missed a spot with the bed liner spray haha. i also had to knotch out the hatch because the bracket wrapped around. Ill get more pics of this if ya want.
I had to knotch out the bumper too. i also lined the with the dorr edge crap. No sliced fingers! the bottom bracket the wrapped around, i had to use a braket and then a little rubber grommet. i only bolted in one hole because it was already really sturdy at this point.
Then it was time for the top bracket which it latched on to. i had to take off the interior panel and slide the plate i was bolting into in there. then have my dad tighten the bolts on the outside. i also had to knotch out the plastic piece for it to work. and my wiper still works!
i shoulda hit it up with some paint first.
it sits at a slight angle but its the only way it would work.
i painted the carrier with duplicolor bedliner spray. ( awesome stuff btw). and i sanded up the plastic pieces and hit them with some black plastic spray paint.
and lastly just a little poser shot lol

Looks good minus the angle.
Have you thought about building a spacer?
I've been putting some thought into using the BII swing out also..

It looks good but did you reinforce it in anyway so the bolts don't rip out over time or whenever you step up your tire size?

you could just slide a small legnth of steel pipe over the bottom mounting stud for the tire to make the tire sit more evenly.
The carrier itself would still be angled but nobody is likely to notice that if the tire is sitting straight.
Either way it looks great!
