Want to see what comments I can round up for which Jeep platform is all around better to start with for a semi-serious not overly aggressive off road machine? I now own a 97 xj DD and 96 zj that can go either way.

Probably some others, but these are the ones I've seen do well off-road

 

If its between the xj or zj I'd go with the xj no question. More options and aftermarket parts.

 

The XJ is smaller, lighter and is usually less expensive to build. My bro-in-law bought a '97 GC and has regretted it since he had to start fixing stuff. He also can't get into the same places I can with my XJ.

 

xj and upgrade the good parts from the zj like rear disk brakes, brake booster, fan clutch, power steering pump, gas tank skid, tie rods and a few others in there that will make a great xj
