Depends on what you want cosmetically, and what you are using it for. Also, how much was the check? Or at least, how much do you want to spend? You can get a decent 3 inch lift and tires for 1k.

Here is a link to Rusty's 4.5" Spring Kit where you get the lift and the rims/tires for $1470.

4k but im not trying to spend that all on lift and tires. i think the max i wanna do on a lift and tires is 1500 and spend the rest on winch, roof rack, building rock sliders, etc.
im mainly using it for daily driving but when i go offroading it will be for mudding or snow
i was thinking of a 6 or 8 but if i do that do i have to replace stuff? drive shaft, sway bar, etc?

Well if you want to go 6-8, you are looking at a SYE w/ driveshaft at the least.. then you have to decide if you want long arms or short... If all you are going to do is hit some mud and snow, no real flexing... then you could look at Rusty's 6.5" Spring Kit which also comes with the rims/tire $2050, or you can just pick up the Rusty's 6.5" w/out the rims/tires $1100.. I mean there are plenty of other awesome kits out there... just ones I have been looking at the most.. I mean you could also look at Rough Country's kits which are a bit cheaper, but would fit your requirements as well..

My 2 cents... Keep it lower, not necessarily stock low but keep in mind the higher you go the more money u spend. As stated before you gotta get an SYE. and Hight changes all kinds of driveline and steering stuff. CG will be higher and if you want to add a roof rack even higher yet. If its your DD you might not like it up n the clouds. This is just my stupid little opinion and do what you want but I would get a really good quality 3"-3.5" lift then invest in armor, Skid plates, bumpers and such. Lifted XJ's are way cool I love them but if your going to spend tons of cash getting it to the clouds then never wheel it like it was built to be wheeled, thats lame. Think about what you are really going to use it for.

Again just my 2 Cents I am looking forward to seeing the end result though.

Do. The 4.5 in rough country long arm kit and save your self the time of upgrading the short arms to long arms down the road

RC 6.5" LA all the way! (or 4.5" as your looking for smaller)
forget all this crap people talk about RC there stuff is top notch and at a great price.
they will warranty almost everything on the lift kit as well.

First thing you should do is take off roading to see if you even like it. Rausch Creek isn't too far from you. Take 81 N to Tremont. Take it on some easy blue trails and get used to how the XJ feels. You have a good shop close to you, http://www.knowwhere2jeep.com/catalo...ducts_id=17554. kNOwhere to jeep (Eric)only charges a flat fee of $5.00 per order. He's knowledgeable and he'll work with you.(Tell him RkyMtnH sent you,I get no discount either, he just happens to be on the BOD for our Jeep Club in Md.) Then make your decision from there. Definately go wheel it and fun with it. Once you start with the lift, it doesn't stop.

There's absolutly nothing wrong with rc lift kits and very true ditch there shocks and your set up. It's not like he's planning on runnig 1 tons and 40s the rc lift kit will do for him just fine

howse come nobody is mentioning the cost of regearing? are y'all runnin' the 3:55's? haha.

I havn't heard anybody mention that Rubicon Express is prolly the best thing you can spend a dollor on for a jeep these days... Their kits are bullet-proof and very driver friendly.

I've installed several RC lifts and they fit nicely, but they are noisy and have bind issues under big flex. U'll eventually bend or tear your lower control arm mounts off the axle due to the way they achieve articulation with their long arm kit.

Rock Krawler has come a long way, but they are a little noisy also.

I heard this said in a previous post and I try hard as I can to convince 1st time lifters of this. Make sure you want a lifted vehicle and that you like the way that one drives. U'll spend big money trying to get it to drive like stock again and you can come close, but never quite right.

and... the very best way to create a weak link is to go cheap...
