bad engine sound

I have a 2000 sport 4.0 and the engine is making a heavy grinding sound when running. Almost sounds like its somewhere near the pulleys and belt. I've changed the coil pack, spark plugs and just recently the battery. Any idea?

oh man, it was definately not any of those things grinding, lol. What you wanna do is grab 10 or 15 bucks, hit autozone and get a mechanics stethoscope. Start the jeep, put em on your head and touch them to metal near each pulley until you find the one that's grinding. Then you know for sure what to replace.

does it run ok?

silversport00 12-12-2011 02:03 PM

Sort of sluggish and misfires 3rd gear? That's why I changed the plugs and coil pack and its still making a heavy sound, I'm almost postive its one of the pullies

Yeah It could be something coming in contact with a pulley... Whats the oil pressure look like?

Probably alternator. They are mounted in the dumbest position possible at the bottom where they pick up everything they shouldn't. You could also just use your hand to touch all the accessories (a/c pump, alternator, power steering pump) while it's running, be careful of the fan. You should be able to feel which one is vibrating and grinding. Or pull the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand and it should be very noticeable.

Mhmmm oil pressure only rises to the halfway mark when the gas pedal is pushed, now that you mention it I've had electrical problems just the other day, so I baught a new battery and terminals and she kicked over. The alternater is a high possibility

If it's not charging sometimes and draining that battery too much that could cause it to misfire too.
