B rated tire for my WJ?

So I was looking online for some new tires and I called a few places and was told a load B rated tire with 4 ply was good for my 04 WJ? Is this true or am I being taken for a ride here?

Sounds legit. Looking on Tire Rack it looks like a direct replacement calls for an SL load rating. SL=Standard Load=4 ply=B load rating.

It will be the cheapest, softest ride, since PSI is usually ~35. If you were to tow heavier loads or do semi-decent off-roading a heavier load range would be in order for the stiffer sidewall.

Edited because it's too darn early!! B load is pretty much standard equipment on passenger vehicles. It's fine.

An SL rated P-metric tire is PLENTY fine under a WJ. Many full-size trucks even come from the factory with P-metrics. XL rated P-metric tires or LT-metric tires with a load rating of C would also be fine. D and E is where the ride will get quite rough.

I do mostly street driving but do occasionally trail ride and there maybe some rocks along the way plus New England winter fun.

It's your call, I don't know what you need in terms of size, load, or tread. As mschi said, you can opt for an XL or LT tire of you wish. You may have to play with the size a little. Stock 17" calls for 235 65 17, in that size you are mostly limited to all season tires. If you move to a 235 70 17 (for instance) there are options for an XL load tire with more aggressive tread (all terrain).
Very small changes in size should have minimal effect on speedometer calculations, mileage, and ride comfort.

Like I said, I don't know what you need so I won't tell you what to do. But do research and be aware that there are options.

so guys I decided to go with the Kumho A/T Venture, the tire has an aggressive thread and good reviews. I'm able the get them for a good deal so I figured it's worth the shot. Thanks for all your help

Kumho Road Venture AT KL78 (being phased out) or the new Kumho Road Venture AT51???

Either way: great price, and the KL78 is a fantastic tire; the AT51 looks promising but is too new to have proven anything yet.
