Auto fluid change
 

I am changing the transmission fluid in my 92 xj, how much should I put back in, (just the drain plug), or should I replace filter as well? bought used, 110,000 miles If I go with filter, how much fluid to replace? I plan on using Royal Purple

If the tranny pan is not leaking leave it alone. I dump mine every 2 years only cause there is a drain plug. Usually about 3 1/2 to 4 qts. Mine is an '00 XJ by the way.

OK, thanks, unrelated question: When in 4 wheel drive "part time" light comes on, but no other indicator that I am in 4 wheel drive, what does it mean?

There is a separate light for 4-hi and 4-lo, if you are not seeing the 4-hi light it is probably because the transfer case shift lever is out of alignment.
IMO, easiest way to fix this is to just upgrade the shift linkage to a Boostwerks shift linkage, the factory one isn't really adjustable and has plastic bushings that wear out.

For trans fluid, use Valvoline MaxLife Dex III fluid, very good fluid and cheap at Walmart.
Do a drain and fill every oil change until the fluid comes out clean! Don't bother with the filter, its just a fine mesh screen and only catches larger pieces, there is a magnet inside the case that catches the majority of the metal particles, but you can only get to it by dropping the pan. As stated, if you have any leaks or seeping, change the filter when changing the gasket just for good measure. Otherwise don't bother.

Crud you are right, I was trying to remember the older style clusters and confused part/full time with 4lo/hi

You can try cleaning the indicator switch, and jumper it to test if the light itself is working or not;

The part time light should come on in 4 high or low, there is no low range light.
