How bad is it? are ya gonna get run over on the highway, or is it just slightly annoying?

it's not so bad, first gear isn't great to take off in and fifth is only good for cruising on flat/downhill.

big hills i can maintain at least 60. My jeep will do 75 but i don't push it that hard unless i get some downhill help. I don't mind cruising at 65 since my other vehicle is a 87 dodge shadow turbo and has plenty of power.

My buddy has a 96 5 speed cherokee on 33in swampers. He has some motor work done so its still decent at acceleration, but on the highway he has no power it seems. Btw on 31s with stock gears his cherokee was faster then my friends 2000 mustang gt.

lol, I got the Chrysler 8.25, thank god. I plan on regearing eventualy... I'm just getting ready to put a 4.5" lift on it in a few weeks here and am trying to figure out if 32's would be tolerable with stock gears for 6 months or so, or if I should put 31's on it until I can regear and it comes time to replace those tires and upgrade to 33's

honestly, I think you will have no problem with the 32's. I have pretty much the same set-up, gearing is only set at 3.50 for now. I haven't noticed a huge drop in power when I moved up from the 235/70's that were on there last. And as for highway driving, we were running right along with other traffic at 70mph somewhere under 2100rpms. If I remember correctly. That actually surprised me since my last car (Honda Prelude) was running much higher rpms. I would love to find a smashed Rubicon for the rears before I upgrade the gearing. I'm sure there are some out there and hopefully I have the $$$ in pocket when I come across them, haha.

Of course, I am running in an auto. tranny. I would think the stick would be better?

Im on 35s with a 5 speed and stock gearing. Its not that bad. The only gear that is badly affected is 5th. Dont get me wrong i will regear one day but i dont know when. I why everyone with 31s thinks that they need to regear. I think it is very unnecessary to regear until you get up to the 33s at least. In 4 low the transfer case gearing is low enough to do anything any one needs to do in a XJ with 31s.

Im running 31's with 3.73's. I was stuck with the stock 3.07's for about a year and I forgot that I had a 5th gear for the most part. Now first gear is a pretty decently low gear for any crawling that I do. I cruise at 65 right below 2k on the tach in 5th. Before it was low enough I didnt try to run it cause it seems like everthing around here is up hill a little.

yeah i run 33s on the trail and 34s on the street to keep the wear off my 33s. its not to bad at all...but i just got my mustang as a dd so the jeep wont see much street use once the stang is finished. i want to regear one day but like said before. 4lo gives you all you need offroad. i do miss how fast my xj was stock with the 225/75s. although even with 3.07s and 34s with the 4.0..i can easily keep up with my buddies zj on 35s with the 5.2 and 3.73s..

So whats the general consensus with 32's?Cause im about to be in the same boat (4.5 lift with 32's and 5 speed) and i do mostly highway driving so i was thinking 4.10's?

yeah those would equal about stock. maybe find some auto cherokee axles and swap em cause that might be cheaper and my friends xj with same tire size and setup besides 3" more lift and a bored and spaced tb can beat my jeep because he has a D30 HP and 29 spline 8.25 with auto xj 3.55s

stock 5-spd gears suck even with 31's. youll want to kill yourself if you do 32's with stock gears... unless you you find a way to drive downhill wherever you go. when i installed my 4.11's i was in heaven. night and day difference.

A stock GT will run 14 sec 1/4mile. No way a 5spd Xj on 31's with stock gears will come anywhere close to that.
