Just curious to see if any of you have an XJ with the stock Dana 44 rear. It came with the tow packages between 87 and 91. I want to know how rare it is, and if you have pics, please post. This doesn't apply to anyone that put a 44 on after the fact, even though that is still awesome.

I had one I bought for parts. It was totaled and didn't have and engine or steering box. 87 with wood grain print siding. (Pioneer I think) Had a receiver hitch and factory trailer wiring so I assume it had the tow package. Unfortunately no pictures.

I kept the 44 and Im currently rebuilding it and have added disk brakes for a later model I have that has a tow package but came with a Dana 35 and ABS.

Right on. Is it not too difficult to switch from a Dana 35 with ABS to a Chrysler 8.25 with no ABS?

I did that swap. Very simple, you'll just want to unplug your abs at the master cylinder . You'll have a light on the dash and abs obviously won't work. The brakes will function like non abs brakes

i had two 87's with the 44.
i have a 90 with towing package that had d35 and 3.55 gearing (now a 44 from an 87).
i have only seen 87's with the 44. all others are a myth.
i've had three other 87-91's with towing package, all d35's

i have a spare 44 in the shop with 3.55 that came from an 87 with towing package. it has 3.55 open diff).

if you remove all the ABS fuses you will not have a light... i had a D35 ABS swapped in a C8.25 and currently have no ABS light

The 35 to 8.25 swap is easy.

And the upgrade path to rear discs from there is also easy......

i will say, you will also need the driveshaft from the donor vehicle whether it's a d44 or c8.25...

Not at all... Just use the tone rings and abs sensors from a Grand Cherokee like I bought from a junkyard for my project. I just had to cut relief holes in the axle flange much like the original Grands with ABS have.

I have another article somewhere about the tone rings and the axles. Ill post if I find it.
