Well the first thing you should do to make it perform better offroad would be to get a new set of tires. Since you only have RWD you should get something with an extremely agressive tread.

These would be a good choice for traction.
Also, if you can lift your XJ.... By all means, do it.
Ground Clearence is your friend.
Buy some coil spacers for around $30 and build a bastard pack for the rear leafs. The entire thing should cost you under $150.
Another thing you could/should do is upgrade the rear differential to a posi-trac system. That way you have power to both rear wheels instead of only one.
With all of those modifications done, you should do alright. Keep your foot on the gas and don't let up. Also, air down your tires when you hit the trails because that increases your "footprint" and lets you "float" over mud and whatnot vs. sinking into it.
Good luck man!

Here's my advice i was in your exact position 2 years ago....wanna know something? Get some good tires, stick a locker or limited slip in the rear, put a 2in lift on it and learn HOW TO DRIVE. Just because you have 4wd doesnt mean you can do anything. I can get through things that other 4wd's cant, why? because they're dumber then a sack of rocks and cant pick a good line...picking a good line is everything. Yes you might not be able to go everywhere, but just try, get that experience. When you can wheel your rig in 2wd without too many issues and can go through a crap load of things, you'll be way better off in the long run. Now i have a rig that can climb freakin cliffs once i get it fixed...and i'll know how to use its capabilites better then if i just got it without ever having the 2wd xj.

btw im a dad with 6 kids..., they all worked for the cars they drive.
not that they didnt beat the crap outta my cars till they got their own!
x2^^
Treat the vehicle you have with respect, dont destroy it (like i have) and wait till your on your own. Or be a big boy, work your **** off and buy another jeep on your own. Have to do that with my new rig. And its difficult, but worth it

I'm lucky enough to have a grandmother who bought me my XJ and my mom is helping me with the insurance. I run errands and help her out whenever I can. Then again, I'm in a single parent household with a mom who works full time so I pretty much have to be mobile. lol
Im in the same spot too. I just put a locker in the rear and it helps a lot. Also im about to go 3 inches and put a winch on. I recomend recovery points or a winch because youll get stuck and its not fun. Like said before get good tires and pick your line carefully.
But ya, jeeps in my parrents name and they didnt want me offroad either. But thats changed now and they dont care what i do as long as i dont put more into the jeep than its worth.
