Default Air tank/compressor on exterior?

Don't have onboard air yet, but planning for it. Can it be attached or kept outside the vehicle, or does it have to remain inside? I like my space inside, not trying to clutter it up too much, and was wondering if it was possible to attach it outside, like within the side rails of the roof rack? Wondering if anyone has an answer for this? I suppose if all else fails, I'll put it in the back, but I think a ViaAir tank would lie nicely within my rack, perhaps having to build some type of housing for the actual compressor, but again, just bouncing the idea off you good folks. Thanks for any insight in advance! Oh, and if anyone's wondering, it snows where I live. Damn, Indiana!

Personally, I wouldn't want all the hoses and/or electrical mounted on the roof rack. Too much exposure to elements and curious people. Probably the cleanest looking tank I've seen was built into a tube bumper. But I agree, an XJ doesn't have many spaces to put a tank on the interior.

idk if you have subs or anything but just build a little carpeted box that goes of the back of ur rear seat and covers the tank, sub or any other things u really don't touch every day..
this one looks really messy but with the back seats up and the box half the size but the full width of the back seat, it'd look like a little shelf and you'd still have a clean looking space.

Yeah, I kinda did the false floor fab already as seen here. Both lids run the width of the back, so if i attach it on top, I'll have a difficult time opening it. Hmm, may have to do some ingenious thinking to get a solution to my next addition (onboard air).

Either mod the false floor a bit to accommodate the tank or possibly a small tank bolted up by the pass side window? I agree on keeping it inside; too many things to potentially hit it, exposure to elements and punks who like to steal things... Or do the always classy bumper-tank/s. you could mount the tank to the ceiling or the rear seat back? Idk...

I vote just pick one of these up.

http://www.harborfreight.com/12-volt...sor-66399.html

I get coupons from them EVERY day in the E-mail. I'm sure there's a way where Harbor Freight would pay me to have them ship one to me

We used one at the trails and it filled up 12 33"+ tires after we were ready to go home without a single hiccup. Just keep it in the bag that comes with it inside your false floor and you have instant air. It's small enough that you could find a spot to hard wire it under the hood as well.

That's a great price. Hmm, might have to do that. How long did it take to the fill the tires? Could a small tank be attached, or does it run solely without one?
