Default 98TJ and 98XJ same motor?

I'm having some issues with a 1998 Jeep 4.0 mated to an auto trans.

Can someone confirm my assumption that the XJ and TJ share the same 1998 4.0?

If it is indeed, can someone else help me figure out why its running like ****?

I hate to ask about a Wrangler but the people over at WF.com seem to have black-balled me cuz I've got a Cherokee.

Idles like garbage but runs fine when moving. From past experience this SCREAMS EGR valve, but I'm not sure. CEL was tossed, but I don't have a scanner til tomorrow night. Can I "key-off key-on" the codes?

I'll need to clean the EGR, has anyone done so? Any way you can give me instructions and tips?

Can I Seafoam an EGR problem away? I've never seafoamed an intake, is there a writeup that I can use? I've heard you can suck it up via a vacuum hose but I'm not sure which one to pull and how much seafoam to use.

ANY help is greatly appreciated. This truck is the only auto we've got and my fiance doesn't drive manual.
