'93 vs. '90 XJs
so i sold my '93 cherokee, looking for another vehicle, hopefully a better XJ. i found a 1990 cherokee 4x4 for cheap.
what i'd like to know is what are the main diffrences between a 1990 XJ and a 1993 XJ both 4x4, autos, 6 cyl. 4 doors. or are they both the same (for the most part)

they are pretty much the same...the limited was an XJ model in 1990, but not 93..just mostly cosmetic stuff...like raised lettering on the outside where it says cherokee and 4x4 instead of stickers like the 93 has..just stuff like that
the dana 44 may have been an option on them in 90, but i dont think so...i know some of the late 80s had dana 44s, but im not sure if that carried over into the 90s or not, but i doubt it

if it drives good, is this a good deal?...'90 cherokee 4x4, auto, 4.0l 6 cyl. 124,750 miles, both interior/exterior look real clean, red/gray - $1800 @ a dealer

I paid 1200 for mine and its a 206,000mi piece of crap, so Id say thats an OK deal.
Check for rust, knocks, squeals, etc. Make sure the 4wd works good, but if it doesnt dont worry too much. The vac disconnect is known to go bad. I just did a writeup on modifying it yesterday.
Keep in mind that its a Renix, there are no CELs or "codes" since its PRE-obd
The renix takes a few seconds to start, it has more parameters that need to be met before it will fire, unlike the newer models. Overall, it is a very simple and robust system, Made by an aeronautics company (bendix).
The renix also has 173hp compared to the 190 of the HO engines, but more low end torque.

My dads got a 90. It has a lot of road noise even more than most xjs I have riden in. It has not so great acceleration but tons of torque. Then again its a 90 with 240k on it so I think its ok. I also am looking at buying and test drove a 94 with the HO and noticed a difference in the swiftness of the 94.

It depends on you. If it were me. I don't like the renix the h.o. Has more power and is far more simplistic. Ezer to get more like a 99+ intake. And ezer to water prof. Also axles the 90 has a dis co and they use the d35 more in the renix years. That's about it this is all personal preff and they are debatable. Its just what I think and know. The less possible things you have to go wrong. The less things will go wrong. That's just comin sense.
As for the price. Lol. Its just me but here is my list of jeeps there issues and cost.
91 180000 mi rusty and a air bubble in the coolint. 600 first jeep I bought no longer with me.
95 15000 mi blown head gasket bad knock 250 put the 91 moter in it now brutal xj wheeler only
99 125000 mi bent front axle cracked t case body damage 500 friend owed me 100 gave me all the parts called it even. Now my daily driver.
I don't pay a lot for jeeps cause I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I will never buy from a dealer!! How do you think they make money? By rapping you and they don't even use lube! That's just not nice.
