2wd surpise
 
I brought a buddy of mine home tonight. His road is God awful (he said his aunt absolutely refuses to do it in 2wd only in 4x4) the last time I went up I was in an xterra 4x4 5 speed. With duratracs on it. A very capable vehicle. It was spinning driving out a couple times. Tonight I said **** it. Lets see what happens, i do not have 4x4. And because it's not (yet) I don't have a/t or m/t tires on it. Just cheap street tires (custom 428's) my xj surprised me. Not only did I get out with no problem, it didn't even try to spin. Not even once. I'm kind of shocked. What else can it do without 4x4?

2wd gets me all over where other vehicles with 4wds have gotten stuck.. Keep some momentum and roll thru and even up hills. These are horribly made roads of mud dirt and mulch laid down to try and help the tractor trailers and our vehicles to travel on.. into the woods for where I go when I'm working. It's pretty awesome! Only once so far I've had to be chained up to a trackhoe to get myself pulled out.

It's the suspension, I think. The flex keeps the driving axle(s) flat on the ground so you don't get one wheel spin on anything originally resembling a road.

The tire shop took mine out of Full Time and I didn't discover it until a cold morning almost a week later. I think what killed getting up the icy drive in 2wd was the cold gear oil in the front differential (it was about 0 F) so the front end was dragging. On cold days have to power down the driveway but when warmer I have to ride the brakes all the way down.

I found it's really important if you have 2wd.. trying to do what should really be done with 4wd, is that where you decide to stop and park is very important. Say you park with your rear wheels sitting in slick muddy stuff you might have stuck yourself. That and a hundred other situations that'll stop a 2wd in it's tracks that you have to be mindful of...
