Question 2000lb winch

Hey I saw a 2000lb winch on craigslist for $75....Is that enough?? I really dont think that is enough to get unstuck "if" it were to happen. Should I get it and a ****** block or wait and get a 4500lb winch and a ****** block??

Good rule of thumb is double the weight of your Jeep or more. I would get an 8,000lbs.

You can get a 2000lb winch for 50 dollars.......NEW....

Save up and get an 8k+ as suggested.

No - that's just for loading trailers, and working with ATVs. You'd need about a six-sheave block & tackle (and a half-mile of cable) to make it useful for your XJ.

XJ kerb weight is 3200-3300#. Figure you're another 200# or so, and you're probably running 500# or so of gear without any trouble.

3300# + 200# + 500# = 4000# - and that's the "basic load," I'm sure.

Double that (to account for hauling mud with you, or having to pull overtop of a rock or a log or something that may be close to vertical,) and you're going to ahve to get an 8000# pull or better. If you know you're not going to run through mud and crap, you may get away with a 6000# winch.

But I wouldn't count on it.

I would agree with that. I wouldnt go anything below 8k. If you think about the weight of your vehicle and then add it being stuck, you think a 2k lb winch will pull you out? a Winch that small is useless off road, it may pull an ATV or a small boat, but nothing more. Save your money and get something bigger.

Yah. I'd either throw a 2K winch on a trailer for roll-on/roll-off work, or get a 2,000# AC winch and bolt it to the floor in my garage so I don't have to push jobs up the damned driveway...

AC winches are out there - I'm sure Warn makes a couple, and you can probably find a few more (you'll thin the heard if you filter out "Made in China," but I don't mind spending a little more for something I only have to buy once. I'll take Taiwanese or Hong Kong over China any day - their stuff that's sold over here usually gets inspected over here, and Taiwan and Hongkers both learned heat-treatment from us. The Chinese still can't heat-treat worth sour owl****.)

And, since you're dealing with "clean rolling weight," you don't need anywhere near as much winch as you would for recovery purposes. A 2000# winch should be just fine - you don't even put out a ton of force when you're pushing a truck. Ever push a HMMWV? What's the kerb weight on it, soemthing like 6000#? You can still get it moving fairly well, using only your own muscle power...

X2 The RC company I work for makes this 8274 winch in 1/10 scale and it will pull a xj over flat ground

I don't doubt it. When I've had mildly slanted driveways, I don't push the rigs up. I'll have a helper with a wheel chock (in case I need to stop,) and I'll get out my heavy leather gloves and tow chains. Then I'll anchor myself in the garage on something (or just tie my belt to a couple of stud anchors) and pull whatever I'm working on into the garage. Clean rolling weight is far less than a recovery rating - like 1/15 to 1/10 of the kerb weight of the vehicle!
