Default 2000 Jeep Cherokee Start up Issues

Hey yall,
Ive been experienceing problems with my jeep when i first bought it. They told me it had something to do with my fuel injectors but im starting to not believe that with recent stuff i have been reading. So the problem is when i turn the key on i wait for everything to go off the dashboard and i can hear the whining sound of the fuel pump i turn the key and doesnt start up. I then wait a couple second to turn it again and then it starts up right away. For the most part it usually starts on the second try. Depending on the day it takes more than two times. Has anyone else experienced this problem if so what would you say is the problem would it be the whole fuel rail leaking?? or could it be the fuel pressure regulator?

I ll bet it's the fuel pump. Same thing happened on two of my jeeps.

Fuel pump. The portion of the pump that is suppose to prime up when the key is initially turned on is not working.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator on top of the fuel pump is gone.

fuel pump is working but the check valve isn't. And you can't replace it U would have to replace entire assembly

so you wouldn't think it would be the fuel rail possibly having a leak or my the fuel pressure regulator is shot?

x2

The check valve sits on top of the fuel pump and allows fuel to flow in only one direction so that when you shut off the engine/fuel pump, the fuel in the line stays put and doesn't flow back into the tank, thus when you start the engine, there is already fuel at the engine ready to fire up. When the check valve dies, all the fuel in the line flows back into the tank, so the first time you try to start the engine, the fuel pump is having to pump fuel back up the line; there is no fuel at the engine, so it does not start. This is a typical issue with XJ's, usually known as the double start. I drove mine for over a year doing the double start. I was doing some other work on the heap that had me remove the tank skid (which required removing the rear bumper!) so I figured I would just take care of it.

You'll want to drop the tank and just replace the whole pump. Almost the same cost as trying to just replace the check valve.

Check out

Dropping the tank is easy, getting off any armor you may have covering the tank is an entirely different matter!
