Stock since 85 red pioneer runs good new stuff at each oil change 3k we are the black engine sheep of the family, also that stick in a can front drive shaft.
Got it in 85 but its an 86. Factory tow, manual windows and locks. AC (R12 system long since dead), Auto 904 xmission, Command Trac 4X4, 4 door, am/fm no tape entertainment system.
I made CPO in the USN that year and treated myself to a cool looking family wagon with a hidden pair below. A rugged strip mall and established high desert capable jeep.
How was I to know that the next year the car would get the engine to elevate the XJ to the status it has proven. The 2.8 fits the shopping and light off road quite well that this wussie of the suburbs will ever need.
The 84 thru 86 XJ is/was the best thing going in the start of the SUV era. It will take 3 to 4 inch appearance lift and a slick collection of off road looking stuff to doll her up a bit.
But thats the best you can do with the 2.8 or even the standard 60 deg GM swaps.
My first new car and I will pass on before my Pioneer.

I have an 85 Pioneer with the 2.8 out in the yard. Hanging on to it for my Son's first ride. Figure what's better for a 16 y/o boy than a sackless Jeep.
