Some day I would like to try my hand at some tig welding, back in the day when I was learning auto-body and paint at school. We used oxy-acetylene to weld in patches for rust repair. (That was before asbestos products (puddy) was determined to cause cancer) I was able to get a good brazing bead going. I figure it is very similar. It would be nice to made some light wieght racks for the rig.

This was for what we call a Mud Tub for the Drill rigs. They wanted something lighter so I made one up, like the one I used years ago except in aluminum. It's got approximately a 100gal capacity..
Today i used my new Hobart 140 for the first time. I purchased that brand partly because of the positive comments i read here about it. I previosly had a 70A welder. All i can say is my welds are 100% better. A good welder makes all the difference.

I was, at one time, on board with the cheap welder machine route...to me, now, the benefits of learning on a good machine outweigh the cost of the machine. Another instance of "you get what you pay for". Also feel the same way about hoods now as well. Until I had a good hood, I didn't know any better, but once I spent the money? The difference is clear.

4 big *** self tappers in the floor for the bottom. Up top, it’s a piece of 10g flat stock sandwiched between the seat belt bolt and the the hanger. Should be pretty stout like that.
I considered welding a piece of flat stock to the floor and tapping it for bolts, but I think the seat belt fasteners will be plenty strong to keep it in place if an accident were to occur. The self tappers in the floor would just be back up
I would bolt it through the floor. Put a large fender washer on the underside and it will take a lot of force to rip it out.
Is that going to be a head knocker for rear passengers? These XJs are already a safety issue for rear passengers as they have no head rest to prevent neck injuries in rear end collisions. Could crack someone's skull if it's too close to the seat.
Through bolting it might be a good idea. I’ll drill a couple pilot holes and take a look under there.
As far as being a head cracker, I test fit it with me in there and I seemed to clear. That said, things happen in accidents that folks don’t always plan for. Honestly the only person who will ever really rude back there is my kid and he’s in a full on car seat for at least a few more years. The rack clears his car seat no problem.
I’ve actually thought about fixing some head rests from a junk yard car to the rack for comforts sake if I had adult passengers. But I’ve owned this thing for almost 5 years now and literally never had an adult in the back. Lonely life as a parent lol
I know the life you speak of! My daughter is 3 and the wife is pregnant with number two. My daughter is exceptionally tall for her age and was out of the car seat around her 3rd birthday. She is as tall as the average five year old. I have installed the back seat out of a ZJ, it has head rests. I didn't install it for the headrests, I installed it for the 60/40 split. The headrests were an added bonus. Before you know it your kid will be out of the car seat and that rack may prove to be an issue with them. Not trying to be a downer or a safety ****. Our children are our first priority. Guy bumming a ride going out to lunch - f him.
Right on haha. If it doesn’t work down the road, I can always scoot it back or sell it. I used to have one of those trail tough nets. It worked but I wanted to build something for the fun of it too. For now I’m psyched
Back again with more XJ repairs. My floor is now a good amount of new metal. Everything painted green in the images bar the final painted image are previous repairs done earlier in the year.
