For the newer welders out there...a small test.

Below are 2 pics of beads run on the same settings, in the same position. Why do they look so different?

They are both acceptable welds BTW, GO

One is "pushed" and one is "pulled"? I don't know the exact terms.

Push or drag...and no. They were both dragged.

Next clue...both were downhill

Just looks like different strokes. One closer and one wider.

One looks like a straight drag while the other looks like a weave or whip and pause... but that could just be the camera angle.

I agree. The second one looks like what some people call drawing a circle or an "e" while welding.

Reminds me of when I managed the fab school years back and I posted pictures of two TIG welds done by the same guy, one of my instructors. I asked the forum members which weld was done by a pro, and which one by a student? Most people responded that they couldn't tell. But of course a couple of "experts" had to chime in and go into lengthy explanations of why one was better than the other. Which was pretty hilarious when I told them it was just a joke. LOL.

Different welders? Different rods?

No, just a simple whip and pause. Little cursive e's are actually no bueno. Takes you out of the leading edge of the puddle.

So I got a Hobart 210 MVP a few months ago and haven't had a chance to use it. This was my first weld ever. Just on some 16g scraps I had laying around. Still need to get a feel for the movement and cadence of everything but i thought this turned out pretty ok.

For your first weld that is not too bad at all! Keep your beads closer together and you should pick up on it fast.
