I have the opportunity to buy a tailgate off of a 09 truck sorry forgot model will post more in a little bit. But i was thinking of cutting my hatch in half and installing this. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?


I think it would be a pretty sweet mod but its going to take some planning.

Something easier you could do is take the back hatch and slice it in half and just get some parts from a tailgate to secure it back on. You run into a risk that the tailgate you want to buy may not fit. This will save you some time and money and look a little cleaner.

I dont want to chop top mine like that i was just looking into keeping everything right where it is just chopping the back hatch in half and making the lower part a tailgate.
I do love the open air jeep and the hatch moved forward though.

LOL, I misunderstood what you were looking to do. Got it now, kinda like a 4Runner drop down tailgate and upper glass then?

i think thats what hes talking about, like a 4 runner. thats what i was thinking. the second link you posted was one of the ones i was looking for. there is one out there where he did the tailgate too, but i still cant find it

Yeah I would actually like to just chop it in half and fab it so the bottom half pivot down and the top half still goes up.

I'm sure it can be done, with some ingenuity and good fab skillz. If you go for it, make sure to take lots of pics and post a build thread.

Only drawback I can see is if you're already running an aftermarket rear bumper w/tire carrier, you'd have to modify it as well to work with the new setup I imagine, no??

No aftermarket bumper so I am good with that. Just need to start Fabin...! When i do i will definitely take pictures and post a build thread.
