Shackle Relocation boxes (lift shackle correction)

Im a horrible typist and speller guy

A leaf sprung suspention consitsts mainly of 2 components. the springs and the shackle. Leaf spring are a certain length and arch for a vehicle and same with the shackles. For the suspention to work properly the shackel should maintain a 35-45 degree angle. When you add higher arch springs or a lift shackle it throws the angle of the rear shackle out of wack.

Like so

This is a 2in lift shackle. It is almost 90 degrees (straight up and down) Great for lift but horrible for ride quality and articulation. As the leaf pack starts to droop the shackle will actually pull up on it towards the body which kinda defeats the purpose.

Like so

I am not completely done yet (as you can see, no holes) but here is a ruff of the corection. My shackles are 6inches. I put a piece of tape on my tapemeasure at 6inches. here are the the 2 comparisions.

Attachment 15906

Attachment 15907

first is how it sits now (with th 90 degre angle)
second is how it will sit. by moving the shackle mount down 3in or so I am only guna gain .5 to .75 inch more lift. but shooting for 3 more inches of droop out of the rear. I will try to get them installed tomorrow but day is looking pretty busy so we will see.

I would apreciate any comments or sugestions

Not even a comment on how trashed my fab table is?

zedpapa 03-30-2010 11:33 PM

its ok for a fab table to be messy, but whats with the tape measure? time for a new one maybe?

Looks good to me man. By moving your shackle mounting point forward, it allows the shackle to hit 90 degrees when it is at full droop.. giving the most flex. Instead of riding at 90 degrees then losing flex and having a crappy ride. I believe that your ride should improve as well with this...? kinda like a long arm conversion for the front... doesnt hit as hard with a big lift when you go over somethin.? So your last picture shows where the new pivot point will be (where the m. tape begins) on the frame?

I believe i will be doing something similar to my jeep when i get out of school for the summer... more along the lines of this though. http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoRearLeafMounts.htm but i think i like your "adaptor" more and will probably copy you so i dont have to weld to my frame..

Yes ride should greatly improve. For a shackle to work properly it needs to be at 45 degreesish. The second to last picture shows where it is bolted now. last picture shows where it will be bolted and the tape is in almost the same possition
